How does this affect his title once he dies?

It doesn't. He's a younger brother of a peer, not a peer.

Lord Ivar is the third cousin once removed of the Queen, to be more precise, so a cousin true enough albeit the majority of people would not be aware of a relationship that remote. He is far more closely related to the Duke of Edinburgh, being his first cousin once removed, as the link also shows. His title whatever it was would not be affected in any way, shape or form, either now or after death.

As it happens it is a courtesy title he bears as the younger son of a marquess, and is not heritable, though it did extend to his former wife. There were three children of the marriage, all daughters, so not in line for the marquessate though if their father were to inherit it (he is second in line after his 24-year-old nephew, the heir apparent) they would then be Lady first name surname, presently Mountbatten as none of them is married yet. If there had been a son he would be in line for the title and his father's announced sexuality would have no bearing on the matter.

Naturally interested by all this, I went looking for further information. There's a very nice interview with Lord Ivar here, which really leaves no questions unanswered. Apart from the one above, which royalcello and I have dealt with already.

Hopefully he'll have a long and happy relationship with his partner. He hasn't any sons, and his young nephew is the only one in remainder to the Marquess of Milford Haven peerage, as well as himself. This family, I believe is the only one still extant in the Mountbatten (Battenberg) male line.

Yes, that is correct. Hopefully Lord Medina will marry and have sons to continue both the line and the peerage. Which there is plenty of time for him to do.

So, basically, this is much adieu about nothing.

I don't think anyone was saying farewell. Or, to give another relevant musical selection probably more to royalcello's taste, hello. This was admittedly a minor news story when one thinks of the dramatic and often terrible things going on around the world, but I was heartened by it nonetheless, and particularly by the sympathetic and nonjudgmental tone found in all the news reports I read, which was quite a few. Perhaps the best thing of all is that I wasn't in the least surprised by the acceptance shown, in fact I would have been shocked to read anything different.
