http://uatoday.tv/society/ukraine-s-secret-service-reveals-hidden-archives-of-soviet-regime-677240.html

As part of its ongoing repudiation of Communism and the Soviet era since regime change, Ukraine has made Soviet era archives available to the public. This follows what happened generally in much of Eastern Europe after the Cold War ended, but in parts of the former Soviet Union this has been more difficult to accomplish.

A good example of it is this. Russia under the rule of Vladimir Putin, an ex-KGB man, has undertaken one of the most disgusting and despicable historical projects I've ever known. It has been whitewashing Soviet history, which includes the Ukrainian famine, Baltic annexations and deportations and other crimes. (Mind you, I feel the same way about Turkey regarding the Armenian genocide) Above all else, Soviet era files are sealed shut, and it seems Putin is intent on keeping it that way, even if it means increasing hostility between Russia and its neighbours and near-neighbours.

Given that, by sheer weight of numbers, Russia would account for such a great part of the victims of the Soviet system, it is beyond belief that not only the country's establishment but also many ordinary people have bought into whitewashing of crimes committed against one's own people! In these circumstances, only restoring the monarchy is an acceptable outcome for us here.

I have never quite understood why so many self identified traditionalists love old Vladimir so much. Desperate for heroes I suppose.

I've explained it in some detail in a post here:

Also this, by Zianon Pazniak, is a useful explanation:
