I accept the 'defence of the life of the mother' - not just in theory but in practice.  My wife had an ectopic pregnancy, the baby was killed that the mother might live (and thanks be, she did).  Harder than shooting back in a war, but a choice I can make and still look at myself in the mirror.

(The parenthesis about tradition and human rights was my attempt to recognize your recognition of many of the same 'evils' as I).

Glad I'm welcome in your world as well.
Still praying to see you in the next one too!
Love ya!

Something I came across today which rather interested me, and relates to earlier discussions on the thread. It is extracted from an encyclical of Pius XI, dated 1930. I could read the whole encyclical on-line, but don't plan to. Chances are the context would just kill the pleasant effect of the quote! It is from Casti Connubii, and I wish I had had it handy for some arguments with Catholics elsewhere, recalled with little pleasure (both interlocutors and arguments), on this doctrine that sex is only lawful if it can lead to procreation.

The doctrine is such patent rubbish, so full of holes, and so inconsistently and hypocritically applied that it is easy to shoot down, but also such a handy cloak for prejudice that it refuses to fall flaming from the sky like it ought. This ammunition might have done the job, though:

This gives hope to people in their fifties or over who want to get married for the proper reason.   That is:

not in the restricted sense as instituted for the proper conception and education of the child, but more widely as the blending of life as a whole and the mutual interchange and sharing thereof.

And for all the childless couples of any and every age.

A little late, but Dharun Ravi has been convicted of most of the charges and may serve up to ten years of prison.

This is an extremely long narrative of the case by the New Yorker.   It's well balanced between all the parties involved in this tragedy.
