The new Pope-Designate, Tawadros II, has announced that the Coptic Papcy will step back from the political role it has embraced during the last couple of reigns.  Both the late Popes Kyrillos VI and Shenouda III had functioned as the de-facto political leaders of the Christian population in Egypt and served as the voice of all the Christians of country during the rule of Presidents Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak.  Now Tawadros II seems to believe that the interests of Christian Egyptians would be better served by secular politicians and leaders while the Papacy will be better off focused on religious matters.

Although Pope Tawadros II has stepped back from acting as the political voice of the Christian community in Egypt, he has issued a statement opposing a religious constitution being implemented in Egypt.  The Constitutional Assembly drafting the new Egyptian Constitution is dominated by Islamists and the new Pope is warning that a new charter based on Islam will be exclusionary of Christian Egyptians.  He is encouraging Copts and other Christians to participate more fully in the system to ensure their rights.

Egypt is a country where a political explosion of any kind is possible. As if the lies, deceit and misery of 60 years is not enough.
