According to a fellow I know and rather like, it wasn't the Bishops....

"I further doubt that it is even possible to reconstruct a fully-formed Anglicanism as it was before the Elizabethan Settlement. The reason for that: the Elizabethan Settlement is the actual point in history when Anglican became fully formed. Anglicanism was forged out of the tension between Puritan and Catholic, a tension embraced and imposed by a merciful, cynical, astute and most complicated Queen. She, more than anyone else, was our most potent Reformer. If we attempt to dissolve that Elizabethan tension, we may end up with something good, but it won't be Anglican. If we don't want to be Catholics or Presbyterians, we have be a bit of both simultaneously to be Anglican."  - Rob Sexton.

It would be ideal, although the chances of it happening are probably nil, to restore one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church: where there is one communion between Anglican, Lutheran, Latin, and Eastern rites.   Perhaps, High Baptist qualifies Baron, I don't know.   The distinct rites would be preserved and the Pope would yield to being only a first (bishop) among equals (primus inter pares).   More emphasis should be put on councils of bishops to settle matters.   Also, I think monarchs, since they too are directly answerable to God, should have some sway over what happens among the churches in their own realm - perhaps the power to appoint bishops among other things.

Oh, there is but one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.
Unfortunately it is currently under disparate stewardship.

Yes, a conciliar administration of the church with proper respect for the differing rites and modes, and recognition of the role of Princes would be a wonderful thing.  While I pray to be wrong, I can not see how that will happen before the restoration of all things....

When I submitted the same thing to a friend, he wrote back:

The schisms and fragmentation of the Church has damaged that enterprise.

Well Baron, I hope you put in a good word for me if and when that day comes.  Just say I was a decent chap who meant well.

I think I'll have the smell of smoke about me, but I'll do what I can...
