Getulio Vargas, the dictator of the Brazilian Estado Novo, was a social democrat, who enacted progressive labor laws and introduced heavy state regulation of the economy. Vargas overthrew the oligarchic Old Republic of Brazil in 1930. Vargas was President of Brazil from 1930 to 1945. He ruled Brazil as a dictator, but he opposed Fascism and Communism. Getulio Vargas was overthrown in 1945. Getulio Vargas was elected President of Brazil in 1950 with the support of the Brazilian Labour Party, a social democratic party, which he founded after he was overthrown in 1945. Vargas founded Petrobras, the state-owned oil company of Brazil, in 1953. Vargas committed suicide in 1954 during a military coup against him.

I wouldn't call Vargas a social democrat. I think he is rather hard to classify. His party included among it's ranks people from all across the political spectrum. His opposition to the Axis Powers also had little to do with ideology. Brazil was neutral at first and took sides only because of 'Murican pressure.
