His Beatitude Ignatius IV, Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and all the East has died at the age of
92.  The Patriarch suffered a stroke earler this week and had been flown from Damascus to Beirut for medical treatment, but died at the St. George Hospital there.  His Beatitude has been Patriarch of Antioch since 1979.  Both the Eastern (Greek) and Oriental (Syriac) Patriarchates of Antioch claim Apostolic Succession from St. Peter who established the Church of Antioch.

With the deaths of the Coptic Pope, the Patriarch of Ethiopia, the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Patriarch of Bulgaria, and now the Patriarch of Antioch, this has been a record year for the repose of Eastern and Oriental Church leaders.

I believe there are five (or currently four, given the news above) claimants to the See of Antioch. Historically, there has also been a sixth.

There is one Eastern Orthodox( Eternal memory to his holiness), one Syriac Orthodox, and three Eastern Catholic ones. (Melkite, Syrian ,and Maronite).

It is unusual that so many great Eastern churchmen have passed away in this year. Hopefully Patriarch Ignatios can be the end of this trend.

Memory Eternal to them all!
