Some of the chiefs won't attend talks with the PM as the GG wasn't invited, amidst talk of protests and a possible no-confidence vote in the head of the Assembly of First Nations. The First Nations have a special relationship with the Canadian Crown, so we'll see what happens.

The AFN is corrupt, and the chiefs are just trying to make trouble, as always.

The National Post had an article today that pointed out that there are 42 Chiefs in Alberta who make more per annum than the PM. Plus there's a Mi’kmaq Reserve in the Maritimes that has 87 (that's right eighty seven) members on the Reserve and the Chief makes a million dollars a year. Yes, you read that right! A million dollars a year! And don't forget, all of that money is taxpayer money taken from the non-Native Canadian taxpayer.

Ah, Now, I bet that money comes from Canadians born and bred.  They couldn't get that much tax from the immigrants...

What they're upset about is that the Government has introduced a bill that would require transparency in regards to tax payer funds given to the First Nations. Any other group in Canada (or for that matter, the US) would be audited on a regular basis, but they think they should be exempt from such petty concerns, so the Chiefs and Band Councillors can continue to live high on the hog, at tax payer expense, while their people suffer degrading poverty.

Actually, most of the immigrants I know are hard working, taxpaying citizens who are carrying their fair share of the burden. I'm sure there are exceptions, but they are not common.

***ETA***Baron, Canada has so many immigrants that if they weren't working hard and paying taxes, we'd be broke instead of having the strongest economy in the world!

My sincere question is: what solution to this issue (regarding First Nations) would you propose? Would you not be in favour of some form of self-government in keeping with the principles of subsidiarity and maintaining culture and tradition?

David, they have self-government, far beyond anything the US gives to the Native Americans (I have no idea how your country deals with the Aborigines or New Zealand with the Maori). Their culture is protected by law and convention. I think that the only thing most non-Native Canadians want is transparency. Literally millions and millions of dollars of taxpayer dollars a year are poured into a black hole with no idea where it is going. It would be nice to know that it is going to the people on the Reserves who live, for the most part, in abject poverty, and not to the Chiefs and Band Councillors who live like kings.

I like to think I do not speak out of ignorance. I have friends who speak English with a heavy accent because they grew up speaking nothing but Cree, my ex-wife is part Mi'kmaq and my fiancee is a member of the Okanagan Band of the Okanagan People. I have nothing but sympathy for the First Nations in the way they were treated for over a century, but  the financial situation has gotten out of hand and to question the situation is 'racism'.

Jovan,

I wasn't meaning to imply that the 20% were kicking in their share, only that they couldn't carry that much of a load alone. Canada does have a lot of immigrants, yet 80% of the population is Canadian born and bred, that is Native Canadian.  I doubt the other 20% could afford the spending.
