United Russia, the ruling party of Russia, suffered a great defeat in the Moscow City Duma elections yesterday. The Moscow City Duma has 45 members. In the last election, United Russia won 38 seats in the Moscow City Duma. Yesterday, United Russia won 25 seats in the Moscow City Duma. The Communist Party won 13 seats, while it won 5 seats in the last election. Yabloko, a liberal opposition party, won 4 seats, and Just Russia, a social democratic party, which supports Putin, won 3 seats. Neither Yabloko nor Just Russia won seats in the last election.
United Russia is increasingly unpopular because of the pension reform, which was introduced last year. It increased the retirement age from 60 to 65 years for men and from 55 years to 63 years for women. The Communist Party played an important role in the protests against the pension reform. The government later decided to change the new retirement age for women from 63 years to 60 years. In addition, the Russians are increasingly opposed to corruption, and corruption is widespread in United Russia.

Despite the declining popular support for United Russia, Putin personally remains popular. Just Russia, which is a social democratic party, which supports Putin, will likely become increasingly influential. Putin may even ally with the Communist Party, but Putin will not allow a Soviet-style Communist regime to be established, because Putin supports the Russian Orthodox Church. The Communist Party has abandoned state atheism, but Putin allying with the Communist Party will severely limit the influence of the monarchist faction of the Kremlin establishment, which includes Valentina Matviyenko, the chairwoman of the Federation Council, and Sergey Aksyonov, the governor of Crimea. According to opinion polls, the majority of the Russians prefer socialism to capitalism. If I was a Russian citizen, I would vote for Just Russia, because I'm a social democrat, a nationalist and a monarchist.
While Putin will remain in power, the decline of United Russia will lead to increased political pluralism in Russia. That makes restoring the monarchy, when Putin dies, even more important in order to secure a stable transition of power in Russia, because Russia will lack a dominant political party.
