Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrates her 40th anniversary on the throne today. She succeeded her father, King Frederik, upon his death on 14 January 1972, becaming the first female sovereign of Denmark in many years.

Margrethe II is one of my favourite monarchs, I like the Queen for her beautiful, regal style as well as for being an intelligent woman and good artist. Altough the Queen is a constitutional monarch, she's not afraid of saying what she thinks. She's one of the last magnificent, old fashioned monarchs.
She told BBC this week: "It is not a life sentence, but a life service", beautifully summarizing the "ethos of royalty" in 11 words...

Many celebrations were/will be held today and tomorrow, including a wreath-laying ceremony at the graves of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, concert, balcony appearance of the RF, church service and state banquet. I guess all our Danish members also celebrate

Long Live Queen Margrethe II!

Queen Margrethe doesn't use Internet, but if she had, she would be very happy about your tribute.
Very interesting post, and her portrait in red dress(and beautiful jewellery) that you inserted there is beautiful.

I've read the official site some days ago but either that picture wasn't there or I didn't see it. I really love portraits of the Danish Royal Family, they have a great style.

There is also another magnificent picture - a new portrait of Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Christian, painted by Niels Stroebek for the occassion of the jubilee, was unveiled on 11 January by the Queen: http://trondni.blogspot.com/2012/01/new-portrait-of-queen-margrethe-and-her.html

I just found a nice, illustrated article about the Queen's style a while ago: http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2012/01/flashback-friday-queen-margrethes-style.html
