As a technical point, His Royal Highness became Prince of Wales in 1958, aged nine. A formal investiture is not required to become Prince of Wales, only the conferring of the title by the Sovereign, and has not always taken place. The present form of it at Caernarfon Castle dates only from the investiture of the later Edward VIII in 1911, and thus had taken place only once before. It may or may not be observed in the future, depending on circumstances and the personal wishes of the next Prince. If that is the Duke of Cambridge, as in the course of nature it would be, his apparent dislike of fuss and ceremony would suggest it is likely to be eschewed, but he will be no less Prince of Wales if so created.

By chance I was in HM's Dominion of Canada (long before I emigrated) on 1 July 1969. It was Dominion Day in a very patriotic, Royalist city. The CIBC bank building was festooned with Red Ensigns and Union Jacks. I went to services at the local Anglican Church with eager anticipation of hearing the BCP Prayer for the Queen and Royal Family. I was disappointed however! Since Her Majesty was investing the Prince of Wales, the Vicar extemporised a prayer for the occasion.

It was also the day of one of the earliest, if not the first, satellite transmission of TV from Britain to Canada, so I got to watch it in real time. All in all, an amazing day!

Did you immigrate to Canada or the US?

To Canada, then returned to the US to care for a handicapped friend. Can hardly wait to go back.
