A flag is a symbol of the nation, not of the political system. A flag ought to unite monarchists and republicans, not divide them. A lot of former monarchies, including Russia and Turkey, still use the flags, which they used as monarchies. The Lion and Sun flag of Iran is used by both monarchists and republican dissidents.

The Union Flag is a flag of the monarchy permitted for use by the nation, not the other way round, so it would be inappropriate in a republic. I see no need to fly the same flag as traitors in the event of a disenthronement.
