Queen And Canada: Liberals To Vote On Resolution To Sever Ties With Monarchy At Convention

Members of the Liberal party will vote later this month on whether Canada should cut ties with the monarchy and replace the Queen with an elected head of state. The vote will take place at the Liberal convention, taking place January 13-15 in Ottawa, in response to a resolution put forward by the youth wing of the party.

Well, if I were Canadian I would back the NDP myself. The Liberal Party seems to be dying anyways (and hopefully the Bloc is dead in the water already).

The Bloc may come back. I hope not, but Canadian politics is weird. As to the Liberals, don't forget '92 when the Tories were reduced to two seats, the Bloc was the Official (not so Loyal) Opposition and the Alliance was in third. Today, we have a majority Conservative Government. They can still come back. However, this is smoke and mirrors. They're in full meltdown mode after Count Ignatieff led them to their worst showing in the history of Confederation and, rather than actually talking about rebuilding, some of them want to show how 'relevant' they are by adopting republicanism.

The youth wing of the British Liberal Democrats tried something similar a number of years ago but their proposal got voted down. Hopefully the same outcome will be seen in this instance. If this vote gets a majority I wonder if it is binding and will have to become Liberal Party policy?

Liberals vote to legalize marijuana, support monarchy

Quote:
Liberals voted 67 per cent to reject a motion that would have seen Canada [sever] its ties with the monarchy. One young Liberal speaking against the motion, called it a "fringe issue," while another said it would be very "divisive" for the party.

This Liberal endorsement of the monarchy and belittling of republicanism by such an overwhelming margin is nice to see.
