http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McCoubrey

The world's oldest man, James McCoubrey, passed away on July 5th, 2013, at the age of 111 years, 295 days. He was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on September 13th, 1901, and died in Walnut Creek, California.

He had succeeded Jiroemon Kimura as world's oldest man only last month, and was the last living man born in 1901. Mr. McCoubrey's successor as world's oldest man is Jokichi Igarashi, of Japan. Mr. Igarashi was born on January 26th, 1902 in Niigata Prefecture, where he still resides today. Jokichi Igarashi is as of July 7th 111 years, 162 days old.

Susannah Mushatt Jones turns 114 years old today, the 93rd person in history to verifiably celebrate that particular birthday. She resides in Brooklyn, NYC, and was born in Lowndes County, Alabama on July 6th, 1899. She has lived in NYC since the year 1923, approximately 90 years as of this year. Wow.

I'm sure there will be many news articles on her in the coming days. I've read in other articles that she didn't believe there wasn't at least one person in NYC older than her, and also that some people who visited her for a previous birthday (I think it was her 112th) intended to rub her for good luck. Weird.

And here is indeed a news article about Susannah Mushatt Jones' 114th birthday!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jokichi_Igarashi

The oldest man in the world died today, at the age of 111 years, 178 days. Mr. Jokichi Igarashi lived in Niigata Prefecture, and was born on January 26th, 1902. He had held the title of oldest living man in the world only for 18 days, inheriting it on July 5th after the passing of the previous oldest man, James McCoubrey.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arturo_Licata

The new oldest living man in the world is Arturo Licata, who was born in Enna on the island of Sicily in Italy on May 2nd, 1902. Mr. Licata is presently 111 years, 82 days old as of today, and is in fact the only living male supercentenarian whose age has been fully verified.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_supercentenarians#Living_Japanese_supercentenarians

This fact makes the question of who is Japan's new oldest living man quite interesting. As of today, the title is disputed between two 110-year-olds, Mr. Sakari Momoi and Mr. Yasutaro Koide, both reportedly born in 1903. Sakari Momoi was reportedly born on February 5th, 1903, but is considered unverified as he has not provided any documents to support this claimed date of birth. The other disputant, Yasutaro Koide, is on the pending list of the Gerontology Research Group, a status which means he has provided one or two documents to support his claimed date of birth, but not the three required by the GRG for full verification. Mr. Koide's reported birthdate is March 13th, 1903, and since he has provided some evidence to support this, while Mr. Momoi has none, I'd think Yasutaro Koide has more claim to the title of oldest living man in Japan.

The GRG, by the way, is officially charged by the Guinness Book of World Records with verifying the oldest people in the world. They're pretty accurate.

Well, surprising news today! It turns out that James McCoubrey, Jokichi Igarashi, and Arturo Licata were all never in fact the world's oldest living man!

Just today, they verified the age of Mr. Salustiano Sanchez, who was indeed born on June 8th, 1901, in Spain. Today he lives as a 112-year-old in Grand Island, New York, nearby to Niagara Falls.

Congratulations to him, here's his Wikipedia article, with plenty of links to news articles about him:

Also, yesterday Bernice Madigan of Massachusetts became the 94th verified person in history to turn 114! Happy belated birthday to her! And congratulations!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soledad_Mexia

And today Soledad Mexia, a Mexican-American immigrant living in San Diego, became the 95th verified person in history to turn 114! Yay for her, hopefully there will be news articles about her birthday celebration over the next few days.

Also, as for the aforementioned dispute over who the oldest man in Japan is following the death of Jokichi Ikarashi, apparently Sakari Momoi has ended up of the GRG's pending list after all, so he is presumed to be Japan's oldest man as of Ikarashi's death. Mr. Momoi was born in 1903.

Also, a new supercentenarian from the 19th century has been validated, Ms. Blanche Cobb of Florida, a black woman born in Georgia on September 8th, 1900, and she is presently the 5th-oldest living African-American, the 8th-oldest American, and the 14th-oldest person on planet Earth whose age can be verified.

KYM, your records seem to be very faulty!!! I think you should investigate your sources for denying the world's oldest human being his rightful title.  And he and I share our birthday!!!!

Given that Bolivia did not issue birth certificates until 1940, I highly doubt this case will ever prove verifiable. And so far it is unverified, sadly.

http://www.ktvn.com/story/23300812/mexicos-longest-lived-resident-dies-at-114

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soledad_Mexia

Soledad Mexia, the fifth-oldest living person in the world, died today, August 30th, 2013, at the age of 114 years and 17 days. She had just turned 114 on August 13th. She died in Chula Vista, near San Diego where she lived. She was the oldest person ever to have been born in Mexico and until her death the oldest living resident of California. Soledad Mexia was, at the time of her death, the 90th oldest verified person ever to have lived.

With Mexia's passing, Opal Thompson, born January 13th, 1901, becomes the oldest living resident of California.

Also, in happier news, August 30th, 2013 also happens to be the 114th birthday of Naomi Conner of Texas! She today celebrates what happens to be the 96th verified 114th birthday ever! Also today, Naomi Conner becomes the 90th oldest woman ever (as well as, of course, the 90th woman ever to celebrate a 114th birthday) and, with Soledad Mexia's death, the fifth-oldest person in the world! That's a lot of birthday presents!

Also occurring with the death of Soledad Mexia, Antonia Gerena Rivera becomes the oldest Hispanic in the USA. She was born on May 19th, 1900 in Puerto Rico, and presently lives in Florida. Meanwhile, the oldest person born in Mexico title passes to Dominga Velasco of California, who was born in Mexico on May 12th, 1901.

Finally, with the death of Soledad Mexia only 7 people are left born before 1900, with a further 9 born in 1900, making for 16 remaining people born in the 19th century.

Ok KYM I think we have all your candidates beat!!! Here is a man who claims all these verified oldest humans to be young whippersnappers! When he was born in Ethiopia, Yohannes III and Sahle Dingel were vying for it's throne, Napoleon III was still Emperor of the French, and young Queen Victoria had only been married a couple of years.

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-23985912

Interesting, but personally I think maybe he's not a day over 140.

The oldest verified man in the world, Salustiano Sanchez, died on the 13th of September at age 112. He was the last verified man born in the year 1901.

The new oldest man in the world is Arturo Licata of Enna, a town in central Sicily. He was born on May 2nd, 1902, in Enna, and he took part in the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1936. He began working in the mines when he was only nine years old. Here is a link to his Wikipedia article:

Naomi Conner, the fifth-oldest living person in the world and the oldest living person in the state of Texas, died on October 18th, 2013. She was 114 years, 49 days old, having been born on August 30th, 1899. She had lived in McGregor, Texas since 1948 (though she was born in Warren, Texas, I'm unsure of which Warren), and she was African-American.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naomi_Conner

Naomi Conner's successor as fifth-oldest living person is Emma Morano-Martinuzzi of Italy, who was born on November 29th, 1899, and is thus presently 113 years, 329 days old. Also recently, Ms. Morano became, on October 23rd, 2013, the 100th oldest woman ever recorded! So congratulations to her for all these achievements lately! Ms. Morano will become the 98th person to turn 114 on November 29th this year, and we must all hope she makes it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Morano

Also happening recently in the world of really old people, a new 19th-century-born supercentenarian was validated. Mary Will of the United States was confirmed to have been born on October 15th, 1900, making her as of today the joint-12th-oldest person on Earth. Also in relatively recent validations, Alexander Imich was verified as the second-oldest man in the world, having been born on February 4th, 1903 in Czestochowa, Russian Poland. Imich now lives in the USA, and also earlier this month became one of the 100 oldest men ever recorded at the age of 110. He is as of today the 98th oldest man ever recorded.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Imich

Now back to the death of Naomi Conner. It is an unfortunate fact that with her death, only 6 people born before 1900 remain alive. These people are Misao Okawa (born 1898), Jeralean Talley, Susannah Mushatt Jones, Bernice Madigan, Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, and Grace Jones (all beyond Misao Okawa born 1899). Mrs. Okawa is Japanese, Ms. Morano is Italian, Ms. Grace Jones is British, and Mrs. Talley, Mrs. Madigan, and Mrs. Susannah Mushatt Jones are all American.

Today Grace Jones of the United Kingdom became one of the 100 oldest women ever recorded! Congratulations to her! Do you all suppose Her Majesty the Queen will send Ms. Jones a special card in commemoration?
