His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Japan officially proclaimed his enthronement today with great pageantry and Shinto ritual in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo alongside Empress Masako.  A long list of foreign royalty and political leaders attended and paid their respects.  Among them were the King and Queen of Spain, the King and Queen of the Netherlands, the King and Queen of Lesotho, the King and Queen of Bhutan, the King and one of the Queens of Swaziland, the King of Cambodia, The King and Queen of the Belgians, the King and Queen of Malaysia, the Sultan and Crown Prince of Brunei, The Emir of Qatar, The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the King and Crown Princess of Sweden, the Prince of Monaco, the Prince of Wales, the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark, and the Crown Prince of Norway.  There were also other leaders present, the President of Mongolia, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, the President of Romania, the President of Bulgaria and the President of Poland were all there with their wives.  The Brazilian President Jair Bolsanaro, Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, former President Mulatu Teshome of Ethiopia, the President and First Lady of Finland, and China's Vice President Wang Qishan,  the Prime Minister of Thailand and his wife (the King of Thailand's sister canceled her attendance as she was hospitalized last week) as well as the Prime Minister of South Korea were also there.  The U.S. was represented by Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, a rather low-level representative considering the importance of the Japanese-American alliance.  Vice President Pence had been scheduled to attend but canceled recently.  The controversial President of the Philippines attended the enthronement ceremony with his daughter, but left before the evening banquet complaining of unbearable back pain.

The evening Imperial State Banquet has been a glittering occasion where royals from around the world were resplendent in their sparkling tiaras and royal orders.  A truly impressive event.

The President of Brazil has caused some controversy by wearing his Presidential sash to the Japanese Imperial Enthronement banquet. The sash is not supposed to be worn other than at his innauguration and at the innauguration of his successor, along with the chain of the Order of the Rose, an Imperial Brazilian Order which he is not entitled to wear as the Orleans-Branganza Dynasty who awards this order have never bestowed it on him.  He probably thought he was outdazzled by the various royals who were resplendent in their legitimately worn orders and cordon sashes.  Sadly he looked far from regal in my opinion.
