I have Neuschwanstein as the background on my phone.  I really must get there someday; I've been to Linderhof (in 1996), but never to this much more famous epitome of royal romanticism.

Not sure about all of the narration; for example, Otto von Bismarck was a head of government, not a "head of state."  Wilhelm I was Prussia's and then Germany's head of state.  I wish people (especially authoritative-sounding narrators of documentaries) would not use those terms so carelessly.

Since the video discusses King Ludwig II of Bavaria in detail, it's really not "Off-Topic" at all, so I am moving this thread to the "Europe" section.

Some great photos from The Atlantic on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of King Ludwig's death this summer:

I visited Neuschanstein back in 2008 and it is quite breath taking.  It's very sad that King Ludwig never got a chance to complete this place.  I also visited Linderhoff and was quite taken with it.  Ludwig was a man of remarkable imagination.

The castle is still unfinished, but it's one of the greatest tourist attractions in Bavaria. During the late King's lifetime, many people were saying that he "wasted money" on those extravagant castles. But it was his own money, not state funds and the castles and palaces paid for themselves many times over. They were given to Bavarian state by Crown Prince Rupprecht in 1922. Now Neuschwanstein is one of the most important symbols of Bavaria. King Ludwig II did a good job.
Here is a good article about the making of King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein castle:

King Ludwig had plans for an even more magnificent castle to be known as Falkenstein.  It was never built.
