My latest avatar is a photograph of the chest star of the Order of Solomon, the highest order of the Ethiopian Empire.  The star would be worn on the left side of the chest, and would be accompanied by a chain worn around the neck from which would hang a larger duplicate of the star.  The order of Solomon was awarded only to foriegn Christian monarchs, the Emperor and Empress of Ethiopia and the most senior members of the Ethiopian Imperial family.  Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Her late Majesty Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, His Late Majesty King Baudwin of the Belgians, His late Majesty King Olav of Norway, His Late Majesty King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, His late Majesty King Frederick IX of Denmark, and His late Majesty King Paul of the Hellenes were among the few that were awarded this order.

My new avatar is a photograph of His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Zera Yacob of Ethiopia (Emperor Zera Yacob II).  The photograph was taken during the requiem mass for Emperor Haile Selassie at the Monastery Church of Ba'eta Le Mariam (Presentation of the Virgin Mary to the Temple) on the grounds of the Menelik Palace in Addis Ababa on November 2, 2000.  The requiem was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Emperor's coronation and was followed three days later with his reburial at Holy Trinity Cathedral.  Most of the Ethiopian Imperial family attended this mass at the Ba'eta le Mariam monastery which is where the Emperor's remains had been kept since they had been disentered from under Mengistu Haile Mariam's office in 1991.  All Ethiopian Orthodox churches conducted a requiem for the Emperor on this date, and on the date of his reburial.  At precisely 3 pm, on November 5, 2000, church bells across Ethiopia tolled as Emperor Haile Selassie I's earthly remains were lowered into his sarcophagus next to that of his late Empress in Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Prince Zera Yacob is the head of the Ethiopian Imperial family today.

Hi,

I've chosen as my avatar the Hessian Lion.

Living in Frankfurt (Main) in the German State of Hesse, or Hessia, I hesitated to chose the official coat of arms.  There are some legal restrictions, as only a person representing the state has the right to use the official coat of arms as her or his symbol.  As a replacement some states have designed symbols referring to the official coat of arms, but without these restrictions.  So I chose one of the "private" options ... .

Ivan_IV, why on earth did you change your avatar to a scene from the Munich Massacre of 1972?

My avatar is the personal heraldic badge of King James VI and I of Scotland and England. It includes the Tudor rose dimidated with the Scottish thistle, and represents the union of the crowns.

Quite fetching it does make.

As for mine it is as close to a 'stylised portrait' as I could find or make of myself some seven years back, it has served me on other forums during this time, though I have in the back of my mind the need to seek out a replacement many times but I seem to always end up with this one for one reason or another. Now if I could find or have granted my own personal arms then I would adopt it forthwith.

Not really a question about avatars, but Thasiloron, what does your signature say, something in Korean I presume?

Ah, yes; it's the (very rough) Korean version of the Japanese cry, "Tenno heika banzai" ("Long live the Emperor"). The shortened form, "manse", is a tad too generic, and is also used (shamefully) in North Korea, so I clarified to whom I was actually wishing long life upon... if that makes any sense.

Also by the way, I'm not Korean myself - my sister's big on the culture though, and I went through a year of basic lessons with her. You know, "sibling time"! Interesting experience, but not a language I'm very adept at, sadly.

'Tenno', literal meaning 'heavenly sovereign', is what is usually translated as 'Emperor'. 'Banzai', literal meaning 'ten thousand years', is usually translated as 'long life' (since no one expects the object of the acclamation to actually live for ten thousand years). And 'heika'? It is equivalent to 'His Majesty'. So the full rendering of 'Tenno heika banzai' is 'Long live His Majesty the Emperor'. The acclamation and titulary are derived from Chinese practice, as is also the case with Korea.
