My intention for this thread is to feature various random subjects, all of which are connected to European Royal Genealogy. I think this is better than making separate threads for everything and anything that pops into my head.

Without further ado, let us have a look at the very first project that I wish to unveil:

Carlos the Second and the War of the Spanish Succession

Charles II of Spain (1661 - 1700) was the son of Philip IV of Spain (1605 - 1665) and Mariana of Austria (1634 - 1696). Due to excessive inbreeding in the House of Habsburg, Carlos had various physical and mental problems, one of which was the apparent inability to procreate. Despite his two marriages, El Hechizado (The Bewitched), as he was called, died childless.

The Kingdom of Spain de facto consisted of the Crowns of Castile and Aragon, as well as their many possessions elsewhere (especially in the New World). I think it would be very interesting to see which people could have succeeded him.

What follows is the (theoretical) line of succession to the Spanish thrones on the 1st of November, 1700. Only legitimate marriages are considered. Descendants of morganatic marriages are also included in the count. The idea is to see all the living legitimate descendants of the Catholic Monarchs, as I have decided to limit the succession to them, for (hopefully) clear reasons.

Just like in the Heirs of Europe thread, women are shown in red. Sovereign monarchs are bolded. Names are taken from Wikipedia, Genealogics and other such sources; many of them are anachronistic - for ease of identification.

Behold!

Peter has helpfully provided some more insight about my ambitions for this project - here. I await his further comments and suggestions.

One would think that I am now going to present the descendants of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (1500 - 1558). It turns out that he didn't have any unique to himself at the time. So, we have a look at what his parents had to offer... actually, it's basically just his brother, Ferdinand.

Due to some reasons, this post will be extremely short. The full unveiling is going to take some time, so bear with me.

IV. Other descendants of Philip I of Castile (1478 - 1506) and Joanna of Castile (1479 - 1555):
  1. Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus, Duke of Bavaria-Leuchtenberg (1638 - 1705), second cousin of...
  2. Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1642 - 1723), father of...
  3. Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany (1663 - 1713), brother of...
  4. Gian Gastone de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1671 - 1737), brother of...
  5. Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici (1667 - 1743), niece of...
  6. Francesco Maria de' Medici, Duke of Rovere and Montefeltro (1660 - 1711), second cousin once removed of...
  7. Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine (1658 - 1716), brother of...
  8. Charles III Philip, Elector Palatine (1661 - 1742), father of...
  9. Countess Palatine Elisabeth Auguste Sofie of Neuburg (1693 - 1728), niece of...
  10. Alexander Sigismund von der Pfalz-Neuburg (1663 - 1737).

Current number of heirs: 100.

Disclaimer: I have decided not to count Princess Sofie Luise von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, who was born in 1693. Genealogics has her dying mere days after her birth, but Wikipedia in several languages shows her death year as 1776. If the latter is true, then she would be number 28 above. Another controversy is the existence of a further child of Duke Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. She is only to be found (as far as I have seen) on the English Wikipedia page of his wife: "Magdalena (b. Altenburg, 18 July 1698 – d. 13 November 1712)". She's not even on Genealogics.

  26. Anne, Queen of Great Britain (1665 - 1714), first cousin of...
  27. William III of England (1650 - 1702).
Current number of heirs: 477.

Disclaimer: Due to the very big number of descendants of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I on that date, it is quite possible that I have not included someone. In case an omission is spotted, double-check it and inform me. Thank you.
Incidentally, I have not included anyone who was legitimated by their parents' marriage. Just if anyone asks.

TO BE CONCLUDED...

After having braved through what must have seemed like half of Europe's population at the end of the 17th century, we arrive at the Catholic Monarchs themselves. It turns out that they had some exclusive descendants of their own on that fateful date. Let us see who they were.

V. Other descendants of Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452 - 1516) and Isabella I of Castile (1451 - 1504):
  1. Peter II of Portugal (1648 - 1706), brother of...
  2. Catherine of Braganza (1638 - 1705), second cousin once removed of...
  3. Don Emanuel Joaquim Garcia Alvarez de Toledo y Portugal, 4.Marquess de Flexilla, 8.Conde de Oropesa (1642 - 1707), father of...
  4. Don Pedro Vicente Alvarez de Toledo y Portugal, 5.Marqués de Flexilla, 9.Conde de Oropesa (1685 - 1728), brother of...
  5. Doña Josefa Alvarez de Toledo y Portugal (1681 - 1754), second cousin twice removed of...
  6. Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, 8th Duke of Escalona (1650 - 1725), father of...
  7. Mercurio López Pacheco, 9th Duke of Escalona (1679 - 1738), brother of...
  8. Marciano Fernández Pacheco (1688 - 1743).
Total number of heirs: 485.

There you go! Nearly 500 legitimate descendants of the Catholic Monarchs on the 1st of November, 1700. Granted, some of them were Protestants, so unlikely to have been ever considered.

An important aspect of the project was indicating the rulers who were descended from Fernando and Isabel. As one can see, almost all European sovereigns of the time are included in the count.

The exceptions are generally the following:
1) Any country, which had a republican form of government, such as San Marino, Switzerland (mostly), Venice and the Netherlands. The Papal States are also here due to the elective nature of the Head of State.
2) Smaller states, such as Monaco. Its Princely family is generally not very well connected to the others even today.
3) Non-Christian countries. The only example I can think of is the Ottoman Empire, though.
4) Russia. Peter the Great was very remotely related to his fellow monarchs, but some knowledge of history shows that this was about to change.

Another thing is the fact that a Frenchman and an Austrian man were the primary candidates for Spain and its thrones. Before I started this project, I had wondered if there couldn't have been some Spaniard, who could have been proposed instead. Well, it seems that the Spanish nobility had been saved for this post. However, this was well before the rise of nationalism, so the nationality of the claimant did not matter much, as long as he (for it was almost always a he) was of the right religion.

I wouldn't dream of making a follow-up to this project with another one, which is to be set in more contemporary times. I wonder what the number of people in line would be. Technically speaking, it doesn't matter, as the current succession has been limited to the heirs of King Juan Carlos I of Spain. It would be interesting as a genealogical excercise, though.

Now, let us see how Carlos II was related to each sovereign monarch from those above:

1) To Felipe V, King of Spain (1700 - 1724 and 1724 - 1746): half-granduncle.
2) To Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre (1643 - 1715): first cousin.
3) To Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor (1658 - 1705): first cousin.
4) To Frederik IV, King of Denmark and Norway (1699 - 1730): fourth cousin three times removed.
5) To August II, King of Poland (1697 - 1706 and 1709 - 1733): fourth cousin two times removed.
6) To Karl XII, King of Sweden (1697 - 1718): fourth cousin three times removed.
7) To William III and II, King of England, Scotland and Ireland (1689 - 1702): fourth cousin once removed.
8) To Pedro II, King of Portugal and the Algarves (1683 - 1706): fifth cousin.

The dates are obviously of reign and not lifespan. Closer relations may exist; these are the ones of the line of succession.

With this, this genealogical project is complete.

Let us go a bit further back in time for the second project of this thread.

Elizabeth the First and the Succession Tracts

Elizabeth I of England (1533 - 1603) was the daughter of Henry VIII of England (1491 - 1547) and Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 - 1536). Despite her being declared illegitimate, Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen of England and of Ireland in 1558 and reigned until her death.

During the entire Elizabethan era, there was an uncertainty about the Queen's heir. Elizabeth was unmarried and had no (legitimate) children. Of course, her father had taken that possibility into account; it was even specified in his will.

As the succession had been generally limited to the descendants of King Henry VII (father of Henry VIII and grandfather of Elizabeth I) and his wife, Elizabeth of York, their number was not particularly high on the 24th of March, 1603, which will allow me to list them all in one post.

Behold!

I. Remaining descendants of Henry VII of England (1457 - 1509):
  1. James VI and I (1566 - 1625), father of...
  2. Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594 - 1612), brother of...
  3. Charles I of England (1600 - 1649), brother of...
  4. Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia (1596 - 1662), second cousin once removed of...
  5. Lady Arbella Stuart (1575 - 1615), third cousin of...
  6. Edward Seymour, Lord Beauchamp (1561 - 1612), father of...
  7. Edward Seymour, Lord Beauchamp (1586 - 1618), brother of...
  8. William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset (1588 - 1660), brother of...
  9. Francis Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Trowbridge (c. 1590 - 1664), brother of...
  10. Honora Seymour (bef. 1594 - 1620), third cousin of...
  11. Anne Stanley, Countess of Castlehaven (1580 - 1647), sister of...
  12. Lady Frances Stanley (1583 - 1636), sister of...
  13. Elizabeth Stanley, Countess of Huntingdon (1588 - 1633), niece of...
  14. William Stanley, 6th Earl of Derby (1561 - 1642), father of...
  15. Anne Stanley, Countess of Ancram (b. 1600 - 1657).
Because internet fora did not exist in the late 16th century, people like me had to do with paper (or parchment, rather) and ink. So why did they write all those (treasonous) succession tracts?

Here's why:

1) Henry VIII did not like* that his elder sister, Margaret Tudor (1489 - 1541), had initially married none other than James IV of Scotland (1473 - 1513). For this reason, their descendants were supposed to be barred from the succession. This applies to the first four in the list. A similar provision existed for the fifth person, who was descended from Margaret's second marriage to Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus (c. 1489 - 1557).

2) There had been little evidence that Lady Katherine Grey (1540 - 1568), a granddaughter of the younger sister of Henry VIII, Mary Tudor (1496 - 1533), had been actually married to Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford (1539 - 1621). This means that I-6 was thought to be illegitimate, so his children would also have no succession rights.

In other words, only the last few people were actually considered to be in the line of succession. In the end, male-preference primogeniture technically prevailed and the King of Scotland also became King of England. Of course, he pretended that he was now the King of Great Britain (King Edward III did not wish for foreigners to hold the English throne), but it ultimately didn't matter. Bloodshed was avoided.

Now, let us see how Elizabeth I was related to the other sovereign monarchs from those above. Oh, it's just one. What is this, the Monegasque succession? [wink]

1) To James I and VI, King of England, Scotland and Ireland (1567/1603 - 1625): first cousin twice removed

This brief project should be now complete.

P.S. Henry VII is an universal ancestor. Margaret is an ancestress of every current European hereditary monarch, with the exception of the Prince of Monaco. Mary is an ancestress of only Elizabeth II... and the Prince of Monaco.

Thank you for that interesting survey of the possible heirs to the English throne at Queen Elizabeth’s death. Incidentally, Margaret Tudor was both a paternal great-grandmother (with her second husband) and a maternal great-grandmother (with her first husband) of King James VI and I

In addition to being the great-granddaughter of Margaret Tudor (with her second husband),Lady Arbella Stuart was also King James VI and I’s paternal first-cousin.
