For many years, the concept of a Central European Federation led by the Habsburgs was floated, a reorganisation of the lands of the Empire as it were. In fact, with the European Union the way it is, I could argue that such a prospect is more feasible than it seemed and even more now. Why?

The European Union, in my view, can not and should not last. But if it is dissolved, the states of Central (and some of Eastern) Europe can forge a new federation which would be a far better prospect than the current mess that is the EU. Hence, present-day Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia could form the base of it, upon withdrawal from the European Union. Could it involve other nations too?

This Habsburg-led federation can still form even if the EU still exist. However, I think there are many candidates of better (my opinion) names for this new empire such as: Austro-Hungarian Empire, Habsburg Empire, Holy Roman Empire, Danubian Federation, etc.

But, I am sure there will be some obstacles to this idea. First, many countries such as Italy, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, and possibly Poland would oppose this because each of these nations hold lands that once belonged to the Habsburg in the past. Italy has Trieste, Trentino, and south tyrol where germans are majority. Hungary suffers severely as a result of the Trianon Treaty and Romania would see this as a prelude to Hungarian attempts to regain Transylvania. Croatia and Serbia still hate each other bitterly despite speaking the same language and Serbia still has West Banat. Ukraine has Eastern Galicia while Poland has the western part and Silesia which was home to millions of Germans from the early middle age up until their ethnic cleansing after WWII. Second, Slovakia and Hungary doesn't have a good relation when the Slovak government tried to purge its country of Magyars through Slovakization and language laws. Third, I am not sure if the Czechs would like to share a country with Germans after what happens in Sudetenland.

Since it is multiethnic, it should be able involve other nations but the best candidates would be the Croat-inhabited part of Bosnia-Herzegovina and perhaps even Poland might join in since it has no royal family.

Of course, it can't match the exact borders of the old Empire, in fact it would be unrealistic to alter any borders today.

Wasn't there the distinct possibility of newly-formed Polish and Ukrainian states that would have been in union with Austria after World War I?

Well, since our job as a monarchist is to restore and protect the institution of monarchy, I guess we can leave any plan for war to the people and the new government. But, I am pretty sure the Austrians and the Magyars accept the political reality just for now and soon, nationalism combined with patriotism would convince them to try to get those lands back especially Transylvania since Hungary was mutilated so badly by the terrible Trianon Treaty.

As for Poland and Ukraine, there is pretty much close to zero chance that Ukraine would join or even cede Galicia and do a population transfer. Even if Poland wants to join, it would not be allowed to because if it did, Poles would make up about 50% of the population and that will not be tolerable.

The borders of Poland and Ukraine as they are can't be argued against. The whole idea is that the existing states, with their existing borders, would enter some kind of post-EU federation.

If this new state is going to be ruled by the restored Habsburg-Lorraine Dynasty, would it be a sovereign centralized empire with equal representation to all of its major ethnic groups or just a loose personal union like the Commonwealth Realm? What type of federation is Schwarz-Gelbe Allianz trying to create?
