During our dinner together Royalcello and I talked about what university I go to. I told him it was called the Catholic University of Nijmegen (KUN) until a few years ago, but since that was getting controversial in our secularized country the name was changed to Radboud University (RU). I knew this name came from an old king, but I couldn't tell exactly when or where he lived out of the top of my head. Royalcello (who very much impressed me with his knowledge of monarchs of past and present) didn't know him either, so I looked it up now. See his wikipedia page:

In English he is apparantly called Redbad and he was King/duke of Frisia from 680 until 719. His father had converted to Christianity during his reign and Radboud himself was quite a powerful King.

Interesting detail is that even though my University is no longer called Catholic, there are still Bishops in the structure that governs it! Few students believe this when I tell them, but it's true: the change of name a few years ago was really just a change of name.

Seems I was actualy wrong in my last post: the University is named after the Bishop of Utrecht (900-917) named Radboud. If I understand correctly now he was named after the King Radboud, so indirectly the link is still there.
