The Prince of Wales will attend the canonization of John Cardinal Newman by Pope Francis in Rome this weekend.  The Prince will be accompanied by senior leaders of both the Catholic and Anglican Churches in the U.K. as well as government representatives.  The late Cardinal was named as a "Venerable" by Pope John Paul II in 1991, and Beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 during his visit to the United Kingdom.  The Cardinal, who was ordained and Anglican Priest, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1845.  He is the first Englishman born after the 17th century to be be made a Catholic Saint.

I hope whoever legitimatly succeeds Bergoglio has the stones to re-canonize or at least reaffirm the canonization of Cardinal Newman. I would rather the venerable Cardinal's status not be in debate by Catholics a century from now.

The Prince of Wales met with Pope Francis, and also attended a reception at the English College in the lead up to the canonization of Cardinal Newman.  The Mass of Canonization was well attended.
