The Left's flirtation with Islamists is not out of any love for Muslims or the Islamic faith. To me, it it is nothing more than the Left's desire for absolute power. Ethnic minorities, women and gays are but useful groups for them to be exploited in pursuit of establishing a Marxist utopia.

Quote:
With "anti-Western-imperialism" as part of the glue binding the alliance, everything else falls into place. So Hamas and Hezbollah might have as their defining goal the elimination of an entire people from the face of the earth, but that unfortunate consequence for Jews is by the by, because Hamas and Hezbollah are freedom fighters.

And because Israel is part of the Western imperium, as well as a key target for Islamists, it is also enemy number one for progressives. So an obsessive preoccupation with the Jewish state becomes the default position of the Left. China, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia – pah! The focus must be on Israel and Israel alone.

For me, if you don't acknowledge Israel's right to exist, and the right of the Jewish population of Israel to remain where they are and live in freedom under a government of their choosing, anything you might say about the Palestinian Arabs and their rights is just a cloak for your anti-Semitism, the oldest (the first recorded anti-Semitic speech was by Cicero, fl. 106-43 BC), nastiest and most unjustified of prejudices. There were colossal population displacements after the First and especially the Second World Wars, and there have been more since. Tens upon tens of millions cannot now live where their ancestors did for centuries or even millennia, while others recently arrived occupy their ancient lands and their very homes. But that is to be accepted and no redress sought, with one exception. The exception is, of course, the Jewish State.

Which I have always thought is so hated by its neighbours not because they are Muslims and hatred of Jews is built into Islam and sanctified by the Koran, though both these things are true. Or because of any oppression by Israel of their Palestinian co-religionists, though this has certainly happened, and continues to. After all, these neighbours oppress their own, mainly Muslim, peoples readily enough, and more brutally than Israel has ever been accused of. Nor have they been exactly welcoming and sheltering to their own Palestinian refugee populations. No, it is Israel's democratic institutions, rule of law, good governance and prosperity that they hate and fear, continually whipping up resentment of Israel because they are afraid that if their oppressed populations stop hating their Jewish neighbour they might start thinking of it as an example and wondering why they cannot live in the same freedom and prosperity.

So I think, anyway. And I also think that much of the Left's institutionalised anti-Semitism is similarly rooted. They cannot directly attack the West's democratic freedoms, after all they want to use those freedoms to get elected into positions of power, though whether there would be any more elections after that is a question the honest answer to which is 'not if we can help it'. Not that an honest answer is anything they would ever give.

What they can do is use the cloak of anti-Zionism and the canard of Islamophobia to attack the only fully functioning democratic state in the entire Middle East, and support the monstrous forces of Islamic State, the most dangerous enemy today of liberty, democracy and ultimately humanity. As has been shown by every single Communist state there is or has been, the Left too are deadly enemies of liberty, democracy and humanity. So the fellow-feeling between the espousers of every minority cause and IS, the mass murderers of every minority they can reach, is not so surprising after all.
