After attacks on the widow of King Baudouin for setting up a foundation to protect her personal fortune from the tax man, Queen Fabiola has apologized and desolved the foundation.  She has also explained that the foundation was only meant to protect her Spanish inheritance for her Spanish heirs, and did not involve her sipend from the Belgian government.  The government slashed her stipend recently and the leaders of the Flemish parties in parliament have launched attacks recently on the Dowager Queen.

I personally don't understand why the Queen can't protect her personal inheritance for her Spanish heirs, and think it's all just an attack on the Royals by rabidly anti-monarchist Flemish separatists.  Shame on them for attacking this woman who served Belgium with such dignity for so many years.

I agree.  I don't believe in Inheritance Tax anyway, for commoners or royalty.  It's pure robbery and a denial of the basic right to provide for one's heirs.  Inheritance tax is the reason that today in the U.S. we have only wealthy individuals (who often care little for tradition or the arts) rather than wealthy families who used to care about culture and the future and fulfill some of the functions of aristocracy even in a republic.

This. A good thing Sir Jo Bjelke-Petersen abolished it in Queensland, which makes it an attractive place for people to emigrate to from the rest of Australia.

King Albert II has said during a reception for political and economic figures, that he is "humbled" by the recent scandals involving members of the royal family.
