Imagine you've just walked into a house and seen a man run out from a doorway and slam said doorway into a mass of groping and reaching tentacles.. then you will be able to adequately empathise with my next statement.

I bloody hate using the internet on a mobile phone.

So hello, I am Smurf, from the Cradle of the Stewarts (Google it), of Irish-Scot extraction, a bead-whispering, confession-going, Latin-worshipping Romanist (we call ourselves Catholic normally). Many thanks to Jovan for helping me out with technical issues and likewise to the forum admin'.

Am I a monarchist? Yes.. no.. I don't know.. I'm working on it. I certainly like the idea of it, it has certainly got a good basis in history, philosophy and theology. And quite honestly it has to be superior to the Masonic philosophy of government that came from that French Revolution (long live the Vendeans!).

As it stands I still need to see where I stand is the spectrum of monarchist philosophy (though absolutism is out, the Pope is the only visible absolute authority on earth to which both bishop and king is subject). Likewise I need to find a king. The romanticist in me (blame Chesterton) has a knee-jerk reaction to side with Jacobitism. Not because Lizzie is Protestant (as a Jacobite I would have to acknowledge Protestant Stuarts) but simply because there is a legitimate claim outside of the House of Windsor. Failing that I have two options. I can get more in touch with my Irish-side and become a Spaniard (ask Jovan) or follow the fine Gaelic tradition of taking up service with the king of France (whoever that is).

In Christ through Mary,
Smurf.

Welcome but please be aware that it is the policy of this forum that the legitimacy of Europe's ten reigning hereditary monarchs is not to be questioned and they must be referred to by their correct titles.  If you are fortunate enough to have been born a subject of HM Queen Elizabeth II, as I bitterly wish I had been, it is your duty to loyally support her and give her your allegiance.  You do not need to "find a king"; if you live in Scotland you have a Queen and should consider yourself lucky to have her.  There is no other valid claim to the British throne, the House of Stuart having become extinct in 1807 and the technical slight genealogical seniority of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach being totally irrelevant in terms of how monarchy actually works, and this is not open to debate, sorry.

And, Smurf, if you'e followed any of the threads on the Monarchy that I've posted in on FE, you should realise that since 1766 and the death of James VIII & III, the Holy See has recognised the Houses from which our Queen (and I use the 'our' deliberately) is descended as the only Legitimate rulers of the Three Kingdoms. There are even Prayers for her appointed in the Traditional Missal to be said after High Mass.

I didn't initially give a welcome because I could not have forborne raising the issue royalcello did, and that was his place to do. Welcome, however. I have a long history of clashing with Catholic views, and look forward to some entertaining but hopefully amicable clashes with yours! I won't get started here and now, though...

No Jacobite, I don't shy away from acknowledging the genealogical seniority of the line from Charles I's daughter Henrietta Anne, currently residing in the House of Wittelsbach, to that from James I and VI's daughter Elizabeth, which HM the Queen is anyway very far from senior in (if anyone cares, that would be Prince Lorenz of Belgium). However I also acknowledge the authority of Parliament over the succession, and that the Protestant Succession is established by law and limited to the descendants of Sophia, Electress of Hanover, among which HM is indeed senior. There are various alternative successions of varying degrees of wackiness, but even the not-wacky-at-all Jacobite succession is invalid, there is only one true claim and that is the Queen's. And no one else, including the Duke of Bavaria, is actually making a claim anyway.

Thank you for the welcomes. I shall obey the forum rules and I will not openly question Elizabeth's (I don't see anything wrong with 'Lizzie', it's widely used in Scotland, no different from 'Good Queen Bess' but as you will) position as Queen. I shall simply use this forum for discussion and research into monarchial history and genealogy. And of course bringing Peter into the one true Church .

It may even be that I will come to accept Elizabeth (this will be the last time I bring it up I promise). Jovan makes a good point that she is recognised by the Vatican and there is a principle in Catholicism that even an evil government (not to say she or even. King Billy were evil) can, after time, become the legitimate sovereign authority. So we'll see. It will have to overcome 20 years of growing up on Irish Republicanism and being spat upon by Orange marchers, but we'll see..

Me too. Great answer from Smurf, though, and I wish him luck with his stated aim as regards me. He might though like to try uprooting Everest first, by way of practising on an easier task ... anyone who is willing to debate and keep a smile on their face is more than welcome.

You're not forgotten in my prayers either Peter.

I care much less about the location of Everest than I do about the final destination of your soul.....
