It's a bit early here in Iowa, but it's the 21st in Britain and in the Maritimes! The St George's Flag and the Royal Union Flag are both flying outside my house!

Happy 90th Birthday to Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith!

Joyeux 90e anniversaire à Sa Majesté Elizabeth Deux, par la grâce de Dieu Reine du Royaume-Uni, du Canada et de ses autres royaumes et territoires, Chef du Commonwealth, Défenseur de la Foi!

God save the Queen! Vive la Reine!

'Monarchy can easily be ‘debunked;' but watch the faces, mark the accents of the debunkers. These are the men whose tap-root in Eden has been cut: whom no rumour of the polyphony, the dance, can reach - men to whom pebbles laid in a row are more beautiful than an arch. Yet even if they desire equality, they cannot reach it. Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes or film-stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food and it will gobble poison.' C.S. Lewis God save Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, etc.! Vive le Très haut, très puissant et très excellent Prince, Louis XX, Par la grâce de Dieu, Roi de France et de Navarre, Roi Très-chrétien!

The beautiful photograph above, taken from this report on the BBC website, shows the Queen surrounded by her great-grandchildren and youngest grandchildren. The Shakespeare (possibly) quotation to be delivered by the Prince of Wales, referred to in the article, will presumably be drawn from the lines below, shameless flattery of James I and VI delivered by Archbishop Cranmer to Henry VIII over the newborn infant the Princess Elizabeth, just brought into the King her father’s presence for the first time. Very prescient of the Archbishop!

I add my congratulations to the second Elizabeth on her 90th birthday, attained in the 65th year she has so graciously reigned over us, and wish Her Majesty health and happiness in the years remaining to her.

Let me speak, sir,
For heaven now bids me; and the words I utter
Let none think flattery, for they'll find 'em truth.
This royal infant--heaven still move about her!--
Though in her cradle, yet now promises
Upon this land a thousand thousand blessings,
Which time shall bring to ripeness: she shall be--
But few now living can behold that goodness--
A pattern to all princes living with her,
And all that shall succeed: Saba was never
More covetous of wisdom and fair virtue
Than this pure soul shall be: all princely graces,
That mould up such a mighty piece as this is,
With all the virtues that attend the good,
Shall still be doubled on her: truth shall nurse her,
Holy and heavenly thoughts still counsel her:
She shall be loved and fear'd: her own shall bless her;
Her foes shake like a field of beaten corn,
And hang their heads with sorrow: good grows with her:
In her days every man shall eat in safety,
Under his own vine, what he plants; and sing
The merry songs of peace to all his neighbours:
God shall be truly known; and those about her
From her shall read the perfect ways of honour,
And by those claim their greatness, not by blood.
Nor shall this peace sleep with her: but as when
The bird of wonder dies, the maiden phoenix,
Her ashes new create another heir,
As great in admiration as herself;
So shall she leave her blessedness to one,
When heaven shall call her from this cloud of darkness,
Who from the sacred ashes of her honour
Shall star-like rise, as great in fame as she was,
And so stand fix'd: peace, plenty, love, truth, terror,
That were the servants to this chosen infant,
Shall then be his, and like a vine grow to him:
Wherever the bright sun of heaven shall shine,
His honour and the greatness of his name
Shall be, and make new nations: he shall flourish,
And, like a mountain cedar, reach his branches
To all the plains about him: our children's children
Shall see this, and bless heaven.

Happy birthday to Her Majesty the Queen! Long may she reign over us.
That which concerns the mystery of the King's power is not lawful to be disputed; for that is to wade into the weakness of Princes, and to take away the mystical reverence that belongs unto them that sit in the throne of God. - James VI and I of England, Scotland and Ireland

President and Mrs. Obama paid an informal visit and had lunch with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Windsor castle today. As usual the statement released by the President was gushing about the Queen whom he seems to revere. The Obamas gave the queen an album of pictures showing her meeting with almost every U.S. President and first lady since the Trumans (she apparently never met President Johnson)as a birthday gift. The President and first lady will have dinner with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales later today after meetings with the Prime Minister. The President is on an official visit rather than a state visit, so there is much less pomp and circumstance, but it seems his stay is more royally focused than governmental (as it should be).
