Prince Charles turned 70 today, and the Queen is throwing him a gala birthday dinner to be attended by a glittering assembly of British and foreign royals.  While the extended British House of Windsor is expected to be there, also expected are the King and Queen of the Belgians; the King, Queen, Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway; the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg; and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark are all expected.  The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Serbia confirmed that they have received an invitation, but did not confirm their attendance (it is considered very likely).

Her Majesty has given a glowing tribute in her toast to her son.

The Lion of Judah hath prevailed.

Ethiopia stretches her hands unto God (Quote from Psalm 68 which served as the Imperial Motto of the Ethiopian Empire)

"God and history shall remember your judgment." (Quote from Emperor Haile Selassie I's speech to the League of Nations to plead for assistance against the Italian Invasion, 1936.)

Albeit marred by the odd spot of unnecessary and unintelligent sarcasm, this Guardian article is a fair and actually quite laudatory assessmeny of both the Queen and the Prince of Wales, making a persuasive case that it is time for her to step down in his favour. Am I persuaded? No, of course not. It's not that I don't want the Prince to be King. I do, but only in the course of nature. It's not that I don't think Her Majesty deserves a rest after a very long life devoted to public service on every single day of it. It's the practicalities. She cannot just sign a piece of paper and announce 'That's it. I've abdicated, long live the King!' There would have to be legislation. In sixteen countries, synchronised so all lead to the exact same date and even time of the transition. To the second.

There would be republican sympathisers in many of the Realms, most of all Australia, unable to believe their luck that they have been handed a gold-plated opportunity to exploit the unmerited but sadly widespread dislike and distrust of the Prince and the as unjustified visceral hated of the Duchess of Cornwall held by many. Here in Britain, the ScotNats would also be drooling at the opportunity given them to dig division deeper for their own aggrandisement. A country already convulsed by Brexit would be convulsed further from a new direction. And all to accelerate something that will naturally and inevitably happen anyway, and left to do that will happen instantaneously, with no transition for ill-wishers to use for their own selfish ends. Her Majesty has a service still to perform for all the peoples she has served so well for so long; to reign on until nature brings a close. It should still be 'Long live the Queen!', until the sad day when she does not.

Sadly par for the course for that 'auld rag' as my late grandfather used to put it. That paper has been agitating for this to happen for as long as I can remember, sadly she will NOT (and should NOT) fit with their agenda, and never will.
Yours Sincerely Queenslander

The good news is that polls show that the monarchy has high support in Australia, and most don't seem to want a republic referendum.

Thanks for the preceding information.

Should there be any Jacobites on this forum, 81 year old Duke Max in Bavaria has been waiting quite a while to succeed his elder brother, 85 year old Duke Franz of Bavaria.

Incidentally, Prince Charles is expected to attend President Bush Sr.'s funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  tomorrow.

I think if the Queen abdicated so that Charles could finally get to be King, I wouldn't really mind.
