It is with great sadness that I must report that the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie, Her Highness Princess Aida Desta, passed away yesterday in northern Virginia.

Princess Aida was born in 1927 to Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie and her first husband Ras Desta Damtew. Ras Desta would become one of the foremost heroes of the resistance to the Italian occupation, and was executed by the fascists in 1937. The young Princess Aida and her siblings accompanied their mother into exile and lived with the Emperor in the English town of Bath. Princess Aida would go on to study in Britain. She eventually returned to Ethiopia and married His Highness Ras Mangasha Seyoum, Prince of Tigrai and head of the Tigrean branch of the Imperial Dynasty. Ras Mangasha is the last surviving person holding the title of "Leul Ras" (prince-duke).

At the time of the revolution, Ras Mangasha took to the hills and formed the Ethiopian Democratic Union, a monarchist resistance movement that almost succeeded in capturing the ancient capital of Gondar in 1977 before infighting caused the organization to collapse. Princess Aida however was taken into custody by the Derg and imprisoned under harsh conditions for 14 years.

After the members of the imperial family were released, Princess Aida resumed her interrupted family life splitting her time between northern Virginia and Addis Ababa.

I was honored to have met Princess Aida several times, and can attest to what a truly gracious, kind, and down to earth person she was.

Bellow is a link to an article about Princess Aida. I have also attached a photograph of Princess Aida with her grandfather Emperor Haile Selassie and King Baudoin of the Belgians.

God rest her soul.

RIP.

I'm curious, which organisation today would be the successor of the EDU and how many organisations are actively championing restoration?

The EDU took part in the transitional council in the period immediately after the fall of the Derg. However, Ras Mengesha Seyoum was treated with undisguised hostility by the Tigrean elites of the EPRDF government who believed he was a serious threat to their ascendancy in Tigrai region. The Prince eventually retired from political activity and his party joined the EThiopian Democratic Party (EDP). A splinter group broke away claiming the EDU name and joined the Coalition of Ethiopian Democratc Forces (COEDF). The EDP eventually joined the KINIJIT party that claimed victory in the 2005 elections, but was brutally repressed by the government and which eventually broke apart due to infighting. The COEDF went through various more transformations becoming the UEDF which holds the single opposition seat in Parliament. No active Ethiopian opposition party today is monarchist, although some could be sympathetic if the question came up.

A requiem service will be held for Princess Aida this Saturday in Washington DC at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of St. Michael and then her body will be flown to Ethiopia for burial on Sunday. Her husband Leul Ras Mengesha Seyoum, the Prince of Tigrai, her sisters Princess Seble, Princess Hirut, and Princess Sophia, her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and members of the extended Imperial family are expected to attend. Former U.N. Deputy Secretary General Lij Yohannes Mangasha is one of the late Princess Aida's sons.

A pro-government paper in Ethiopia has published a suprisingly friendly article about the late Princess Aida Desta.  It plagerizes word for word pieces by me and others, but I'm just thankful that it's tone is properly respectful.
