The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg has announced that the father of Grand Duke Henri, and former monarch of Luxembourg, Grand Duke Jean, has suffered a significant worsening of his health since Saturday.  Grand Duke Jean, born in 1921, reigned as Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 until he abdicated in 2000.

Grand Duke Jean is the son of the late Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma.  One of his Godparents was Pope Benedict XV.  He married Princess Josephine Charlotte of Belgium in 1953, and they had 5 children, Archduchess Marie-Astrid of Austria (wife of Archduke Carl Christian of Austria), Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Prince Jean of Luxembourg, Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein (wife of Prince Nikolaous of Liechtenstein), and Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg.  Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte died in 2005 after a long battle with lung cancer.  Grand Duke Jean lost his sister Princess Alix just this past February.

Grand Duke Jean renounced the titles of the House of Bourbon-Parma for himself and his family in 1986 when his eldest son, (the current Grand Duke) Henri married Maria-Theresa Mestre, The Duke of Parma, Carlos Hugo, had ruled the marriage unequal in 1981, as well as the marriage of Prince Jean to Hélène Suzanna Vestur in 1987 (Prince Jean had renounced his rights to Luxembourg earlier). It is not known if the marriage of Prince Guillaume was seen by Carlos Hugo as equal, but his father's renunciation of their Parmese rights made that moot.

Grand Duke Jean has been suffering a lung infection for some weeks now.  At 98 I believe he his currently the oldest male royal in Europe, followed by the Duke of Edinburgh.
