So, as once promised, I've got a good version of my Emily of Wolkeld available at http://borgauf.macsyma.org/EoW.pdf It's, as I would describe it, fundamentalist High Tory Luddite monarchist (FHTLM), but completely enjoyable, with little "preaching" going on. Have a read and let me know what you think. Spread the word, s'il vous plaît.

I've tried to get it published by sending queries to British agents -- I won't even try here in the Colonies -- but I seriously doubt I'll have any success, as it's very FHTLM, something that far from conventional wisdom these days.

My ancestors were German nobles from Saxony-Anhalt, just as Annette von der Surwitz is, and my most recent German ancestor left his homeland, just as Stanley Whitmore did. My most recent German ancestor was an Orientalist, who loved everything Persian or Mesopotamian. He travelled to the Ottoman Empire, and he fell in love with a beautiful young Kurdish woman.

I'm actually born in Germany, because my parents fled Saddam. We returned to Kurdistan after the overthrow of Saddam. We lived in Schleswig-Holstein rather than in Sachsen-Anhalt, because my parents fled Saddam before the fall of the Berlin Wall. I remain a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany and I'm a citizen of Iraq too. I want to replace my Iraqi citizenship with a Kurdish citizenship, because I don't identify with Iraq at all, while I identify with Kurdistan and Germany.
Are you a German? You appear to know a lot about Germany, judging from your book.

I lived in Germany for nearly seven years, so, yes, I'm fairly verdeutscht as I say. It's where I need to be, probably. Yes, the Kurds have been a political football for too long. They need to get their lands back from Turkey, Iran, and Iraq, full stop. Alas, patience is a virtue. I just hope we Americans don't sell you short. But then history is a marathon, not a sprint.

My name is Bottorff, similar to Gottorff or Gottorp. I'm not positive, but I'm fairly sure my namesake was adelig, but renounced to follow Luther and Protestantism seriously (Richtung Bibelforscher). We knocked around for a century or two, being chased by this or that religious pogrom, finally by the Spanish Secession. Some of us eventually went to Sweden, us to the Colonies in 1711 auf Geheiss Queen Anne.

At this point, I'm trying to stay off screens and the Internet. From now on please write me at

Lawrence Bottorff
P.O. Box 1302
Grand Marais, Minnesota
55604
USA

and I'll write you back. Prince Charles' excellent book Harmony got me onto this Luddite kick.

So, a joke for my last post!

God: ...but what will this new invention, democracy, do for a living?
Satan: Why, my second new invention, capitalism!
God: Will they be better for the people and land than were the monarchs?
Satan: Of course! What could possibly go wrong?!
