Just got Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith for my Kindle from the Seattle Public Library (Yes, I have library cards at four different libraries which is very convenient in this digital age of ebooks!). Looking forward to reading it and I'll be sure to review it when I'm done.

The interview was nice. Half of the comments below it, not so much. How can people be so foolish?

I would love to read the interview, but every time I click on 'full transcript here', it simply takes me back to the same page!

Well, I've finished it! First, a point cleared up. Awhile ago, someone posted almost identical pictures of HM and the Duke of Edinburgh, one taken, IIRC, when they were engaged and one taken recently, over 60 years later. Someone else asked if the second was a coincidence or if it was posed.

According to Smith, it was indeed posed. In fact, it took the Royal Pair a couple of hours, according to her account, to remember and find the exact spot the original had been taken at.

All in all, I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is an 'intimate portrait'. While it's not 'official', Smith did have access to many of HM's courtiers and staff, as well as the co-operation of Nancy Reagan and the Bushes regarding private correspondence between them and HM. There are numerous anecdotes about the Queen's personality, her likes and dislikes, etc.

And, since it just came out a few weeks ago it encompasses her entire life, up to and including the planning for this year's Jubilee. I highly recommend it as light reading for anyone interested in HM as a person as well as a Monarch. Probably available at any good sized public library.
