This has caused much controversy in my country. The labour party vehemently disagrees, which is a problem because they currently negotiate with the liberals (to which mister Teeven belongs) to form a new government.

Personally, I agree with mister Teeven in general, especially if the burglar was armed. If the burglar isn't armed and tries to flee, I do't think I agree. What do you think?

Detail: the article says he's a minister, but he's not.

If a burglar breaks into your house to steal your stuff, then you've been violated.   Anyone who arrives home and sees the door ajar and possessions ransacked or missing, knows what I'm talking about.   However, if you catch a thief in the act, how do you know he's not armed?   Maybe his intent is not simply to steal, but to rape or cause physical harm?   Anyway there are consequence for violating someone in this way and a thief shouldn't expect to negotiate his intent while he's caught in the act in the victim's house.  It does seem that the thief takes a risk that he might be killed for breaking and entering someone's house.   I don't see the problem in stating that fact.

If politicians let people shoot thieves. Then pretty soon there wouldn't be any politicians left.

Here is a simple statement of fact.

If I catch someone breaking into my house at night I will shoot them.

It should be considered a 'business risk' by those who break in to steal.

On the other hand, here is a good reason to be careful.

Connecticut man kills masked teenager in self-defense outside neighbor’s house, then discovers it was his son, authorities say
A woman who was alone in the house believed someone was breaking in and called Tyler Giuliano's father, who lives next door, and he grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, police said.

My boys know me well enough to answer the 'who goes there'...

But yes, caution is always wise.
