Excellent speech from the senator representing the party which to me represents a great hope, the DLP. Along with the recently formed Katter's Australian Party, two viable options for real conservatives.

Unfortunately I can't download .docx attachments on my computer, though I am able to view your own article that you sent me online via my e-mail.  Is this speech available in some other format?

I presume what royalcello meant is that he can't open the document with his version of Word; .docx is the file extension for Word 2007 and later. I can open it and could re-save it to an earlier version or a pdf and upload but won't, for reasons which will be obvious once the speech is read. Which can be done following the guidance here.

Open Office opens the file.

Open Office is free and can be downloaded from http://download.openoffice.org/

I knew of that and that it would do the trick, but it's a major download and installation and rather overkill for one document! If you have other needs for it, then I commend it. I have used it myself, and while I wouldn't say it's as nice to use as the equivalent Microsoft applications it can do almost everything they can and is, of course, free, which they are not. Another way is to download the Microsoft Word Viewer from here. This is again free and will allow you to read Word documents, including the .docx format, even on a computer without Word installed.

You're right about that - its "Huge" - I'd say 'bloated' if it wasn't more like 'everything including the kitchen sink'...

I run Linux, so none of the stuff from 'microsloth' seems to work....(Hence I run open office, not any redmondian code).

If you're running windows, you'll likely need to upgrade to the 'docx compatible version' of word soon enough, support will 'go away' for the older stuff....

You're right! I also run Linux, using Ubuntu and Firefox. Not by choice, but because that's what my buddy prefers. I can't run half the things I consider necessary. Yahoo Messenger, for instance will not download, so I'm reduced to using their Web Messenger. It was fine until the first of the month when they merged it into Yahoo Mail and totally screwed it up!

Also, we have, so far, been unable to get a web cam functioning on the 'net, which is highly frustrating since I can't video chat with the special lady in my life. I can see her but she can't see me.

Any suggestions, M. le Baron?

You might try Empathy http://live.gnome.org/Empathy for messenger services.

Web cam works for me sometimes, others it doesn't.
I've not yet figured out why nor what is going on with that.

Basically in Australia, my disgust with the two major parties has reached new levels because of their utter uselessness in solving this country's problems. It's for that reason I consider the DLP and Katter's Australian Party the best choices come the next elections. At least it's better hope than what Brits or Americans are left with in their system.
