Jalal Talabani was the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). PUK was founded in 1975 as a pro-Soviet socialist party. PUK evolved into a social democratic party after the dissolution of the USSR, but it remained staunchly secularist and it remained pro-Russian and pro-Iranian. Jalal Talabani became President of Iraq after the Iraq War. The President of Iraq is a figurehead. Jalal Talabani left office in 2014. Jalal Talabani supported the Kurdish independence referendum of 2017, which took place a few days before his death. Qubad Talabani, the son of Jalal Talabani, is currently Deputy Prime Minister of Kurdistan.
I have always voted for PUK, because I'm a secularist, a social democrat and a Russophile.

I posted it in my general anti-imperialism thread, but it deserves its own thread.
