I was amused by Ireland's proximity to Israel and France on that map.

Given California's faltering economy right now, I am not surprised it is equal to France when it used to be higher.

Any gents want to wager when it'll fall to that of Zimbabwe?

The data is actually 2005, as far as I can make out. More on that here, along with similar maps. The next one explains why the UK isn't on the original one; too big to fit. We equate to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington DC, it seems. Not sure how much the last-named would throw in.

Right at the end there's another version of the original map, by someone contesting the allocations in it. You'll be happy to see that Ireland is no longer Nevada, with France, Israel, Ukraine, Peru and Thailand keeping it company; it's Indiana, with Belgium on one flank and Sweden on the other. Or maybe not all that happy,  Romania at its feet and (gulp) Saudi Arabia atop make for slightly more dubious company than the original collection, perhaps.

Right. That's why Germany isn't there either.

Or Japan or China, the two other countries with economies bigger than any one US state, by the data used (France has currently moved above us, putting us in 5th place). Thinking about it, perhaps Inquisotor will be pleased to have monarchies on three sides and a comparatively recent republic, last King still alive, on the fourth.  Wouldn't want Saudi Arabia as a neighbour under any circumstances, personally.

Try putting big economies on that map
