Reply with quote | #92 | Hi,
My name is Doug Rees, and I live in Berkeley, CA (though I grew up in rural Iowa). I've been a lover of history ever since I received an old stamp collection as a small child and wondered where in the hell Sierra Leone was. In studying history, I was puzzled by the fact that the happiest, freest, most prosperous, and stable countries were usually monarchies. I say "puzzled" because this went against nearly everything I had been taught to believe--both in school and at home. As I witnessed the deterioration of my own country, the United States, I came to the conclusion that the greatest advantage of monarchy is that it does not filter out everyone who lacks an excessive thirst for power.
I do not consider myself particularly "right-wing" in my politics. In fact, most of my friends regard me as a "leftist" (this is, after all, Berkeley). I worked for Greenpeace and other environmental groups for a number of years, and deeply love the natural world. I suppose that, in my own mind, I consider myself something of a Burkean conservative--which makes me sort of an ultra-liberal in the present context of American politics. I decided to "come out of the closet" and proclaim my monarchist views about seven years ago, after I had given up any hope of ever running for elective office.
I do not really think that the United States, in its present form, can ever become a monarchy. But I also believe that, in the next 25-50 years, the deck is going to get shuffled very thoroughly. I doubt if the U.S. will last that length of time as a unified country. It would be better for everyone if it split into smaller, more manageable, pieces, and I can see some signs that public sentiment is beginning to move in that direction. If the breakup does occur, then some of the pieces (e.g. Hawai'i) might become constitutional monarchies.
I certainly think that the reasons why monarchy is the best form of government remain as valid today as they have ever been, and that monarchist ideas ought to be kept alive in the political discussion. We are not merely speaking to the present generation, but to all those who will come after us.

The largest opposition to all monarchies stems not from the fact that the King cannot be like the people, but for the fact that the people cannot be like the King. |
