I'm still in time by my clock, tho' I'm afraid anyone east of me is past midnight, but today is Victory in Europe Day.

We had a march at the Kingsway Branch #175, Royal Canadian Legion this evening to commemorate the day and to honour the fallen. We sang the National and Royal Anthems, recited the Ode of Remembrance, and laid wreaths on the Cenotaph. We had representatives of the various service organisations, the Cadets, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Her Majesty's Canadian Forces in the march and then, being Canadian, we had a few drinks in memory of those gone before.

9th of May:

1901 - HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York (later HM King George V), opened the first Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia, at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne (as the site of the permanent Parliament had yet to be decided).

1927 - HRH The Duke of York (later HM King George VI) opened the new (now old) Parliament House in the new federal capital of Canberra.

1988 - Her Australian Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the new permanent Parliament House (Old Parliament House being the Provisional Parliament House). As as in 1927 Her Majesty opened the doors to the building with a golden key.

Also on a less Monarchist-related note.

Today is the anniversary of the foundation of The Swan River Colony (what became Western Australia) in 1829 (officially held on June 1). In WA we mark it as Foundation Day, the day when Captain (later Governor and even later Admiral Sir) James Stirling RN arrived of the WA coast in the HMS Parmelia.

A few days later Captain Stirling landed onshore and proclaimed the foundation of The Swan River Colony and the annexation of New Holland (WA) for His Majesty King George IV.

It is often overlooked that in April Captain Fremantle RN in HMS Challenger had arrived and claimed WA for The King.

The States could have helped the Royalists!, the problems they have now with a Belligerent Iran could have never existed but Jimmy had to be president, right?
