Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was delivered of a baby boy this morning in the Lido wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London.  The newborn prince's name has not yet been made public, but he is now 5th in line to the throne following his grandfather the Prince of Wales, his father the Duke of Cambridge, and his elder siblings, Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.  He pushes his uncle Prince Harry to sixth in line, and his great-uncle the Duke of York to seventh in line to the throne (which now means Prince Andrew no longer needs the sovereign's permission to marry).

I was very pleased by the news yesterday, and by how well the Duchess looked as she came out of hospital. I would have had a mild preference for a girl, as the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 would then still have made no difference anywhere near the top of the succession. However I am staying with my sister at present, and both she and my great-niece, who is 17, were delighted that Princess Charlotte is now the first royal princess in our history to remain in line ahead of a younger brother, seeing it as a symbolic advance in the status of women. And while not quite persuaded I can certainly understand their point of view. In any case I wish the new prince long life and happiness, as I do all his family.

I welcome the new addition to The Royal Family of my nation (and many others) and wish HRH The Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge and families well. This new prince 'might' prove to be the heir to a revived The Dukedom of York in due course as the current one (and his many predecessors) lacks one at the moment.

Princess Charlotte completely won the internet that day with her little royal wave on her way to meet her new brother.

Louis Arthur Charles. Nice. Don't believe we've ever had a Prince Louis before, the late Lord Mountbatten and his father before him having been German princes, but Prince Louis of Cambridge has a good sound.

I very much hope that someday one of the princes of this glorious Royal House will become the King in my country ...

I really want this to happen.

Prince Louis is to be christened later today in the Chapel Royal, which was also the venue for his elder brother's baptism.

News of the Duke of Sussex's christening present to his nephew. A delightful idea, though all I personally remember from the book are the lines 'Hush, hush, nobody cares. Christopher Robin has fallen downstairs.' Possibly even that is a false memory and the lines actually read quite differently.

Official photos from the christening. The first picture I thought was particularly beautiful and touching, but they're all good. Not that one would expect them to be anything else.
