This article, picked up from royalcello's blog, is concerned with the gathering of the Queen's fellow monarchs being held at Windsor Castle on Friday as part of the Jubilee celebrations. It's not a bad article, but a little carelessly written. Apart from the reservations royalcello has and I share, the Telegraph fact-checkers, assuming they employ such, evidently didn't exercise their skills on the royal relationships mentioned. While it is true that the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen are third cousins, they are also second cousins once removed, which is a closer relationship. I'm not sure how revered a figure Edward the Confessor is these days; I personally think he was a rather unpleasant man and a poor King. That's just my opinion, but it's fact that he was not the Conqueror's second cousin, but his first cousin once removed. And while the Queen and Edward are related that way, obviously with a good many more removals, it would have been more to the point to mention that she is his many times great-niece through his half-brother Edmund Ironside, half-sister Alfgifu and full sister Godfigu.

The Spanish government has ordered Queen Sofia to not attend the lunch at Windsor Castle for royals from around the world to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.  The reason is the fury of Spain's conservative government over the upcoming visit of the Earl and Countess of Wessex to Gibraltar.  The King and Queen of Spain had been invited to the Jubilee, and Queen of Spain had earlier accepted the invitation.  King Juan Carlos had earlier declined due to his continued recovery from his recent injury.  Both the King and Queen of Spain are direct decendants of Queen Victoria, and Queen Sofia is additionally the first cousin once removed of the Duke of Edinburgh.

Since when the government (the King's subjects) can order their Queen to do something? My God, what has happened with Spain?

I wish Spain would grow up over this. Gibraltar has been British for longer than it was ever Spanish, and the Gibraltarian people wish it to remain so. Spain itself has exclaves in Morocco (which Morocco objects to very much) and France (which couldn't care less, an attitude recommendable to Spain). So they are not only childish but hypocritical over the issue. And, with this action, spiteful.

Under a constitutional monarchy the royal family are obligated to abide by government decisions.

I prefer to call it 'ceremonial monarchy' or 'figurehead monarchy' because 'constitutional monarchy' just means that there is some sort of constitution, not that the royal family has to obey the government.

Hopefully all other invited royals will attend the lunch. It's going to be a wonderful event.

Is there any constitutional monarchy in Europe where the monarch is not obligated to adhere to government policy?

There is a Queen who gets to pick her own Ambassadors I think....(I remember reading a bit of a row about it, but the Queen's choice was the one appointed...)

Not quite the same perhaps....

...is this the same Queen that was made to give up her cherished yacht by her previous government, to pay for repairs to a fire damaged castle that should have been covered by the government out of her own pocket, and was also made to hold hands and sing along with these arrivistes at the innauguration of a white elephant project to mark the millenium by the same government?

I shouldn't think so, our Queen most certainly does not select her Ambassadors. That is a matter for the Foreign Office and, I would imagine, dealt with at administrative rather than ministerial level; unlike with the United States, political appointments of people who are not career diplomats are rare. The Windsor Castle Fire was in 1992. The Major government initially pledged to cover all the costs, as is quite proper since Windsor Castle is effectively public property rather than part of the Queen's private estate, but mean-spiritedness in the Conservative and other parties caused it to renege on that and stick the Queen with the bill, which was outrageous. It was then the Blair government which as mean-spiritedly forced the decommissioning of HMY Britannia, and also inflicted the indignity referred to.

Happily, which should be the spirit prevalent on this thread, slightly deflected by my choosing it to moan over genealogical errors and also by the Spanish government's infantile behaviour, the Cameron government has in all things shown a proper respect of and appreciation for the monarchy, which is the reason why the Jubilee celebrations are as lavish as they are. And, to spite the mean-spirited, the people as a whole appear to be quite content about this, and in fact to be looking forward to the party.

I agree that Cameron has been a huge improvement in the way he treats the monarchy.  My point was that monarchs are often compelled to do things that they would not be inclide to do by their governments.  I don't doubt that Queen Sofia would much prefer sharing this milestone with her British relatives then having to sit in Madrid and listen to the government having fits over Gibraltar when they should be more worried about their flatlining economy.

In further developments it seems the Greek government (another government that should be worrying about bigger things) has protested the invitation sent to King Constantine, that the opposition in Bahrain is angry about the invitation to King Hammad, and that the Swazis opposition is raising a fuss about the invitation to King Miswati III.  Why can't people just let Elizabeth II invite the people she wants to invite to her lunch?  After 60 years of doing an impecable job, she's entitled to it, where as these governments and oppostion groups are doing a horrible job at the things that they shoudl be focusing on.

Diamond Jubilee Armed Forces Muster, Parade and Flypast, Windsor, 19 May 2012

2500 members of the Royal Navy, Army and the Royal Air Force, joined by the Guards of Honour and military bands marched through Windsor to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. New pieces of music, composed for this occasion, were played. A flypast of 78 new and historic aircraft, including the Red Arrows, Spitfires and helicopters followed. The aircraft flew over the castle in formations of "E II R", number 60 and Diamond Nine.
The Royal Family watched the event and the Queen gave a speech. HM wore an elegant turquoise dress designed by Angela Kelly and the Duke of Edinburgh wore the uniform of Admiral of the Fleet with the Garter sash.

Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall hosted a black tie dinner for the visiting royals in honor of the Diamond Jubilee at Buckingham Palace.  The Queen was not present, allowing Prince Charles to preside at the festiviites.

The number of street parties being organized to mark the Diamond Jubilee will far exceed the number held to celebrate the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
