Their Imperial Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan have paid a visit to Vietnam.  The visit of the Imperial couple marks rapidly strengthening ties between Japan and Vietnam in the face of their shared concern over the ascendance of China in the region.  The Emperor and Empress met with the families of World War II Japanese soldiers who had married Vietnamese women, including a widow of a Japanese serviceman.

These developments are indeed interesting. I can see why Japan would want any ally it can get against China, while on the other hand Vietnam remains a communist regime. Politics makes strange bedfellows sometimes.

(and just a small point: it reads now like the Japanese soldiers married children, which I don't think you meant to say?)

Thank you DutchMonarchist for pointing out the rather unfortunate reference to children.  I have corrected it.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan have paid a private visit to Thailand and paid their respects before the body of the late King of Thailand who was a long time friend.  They were then received privately by King Rama X.  His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Japan is the first foreign head of state to meet with the new King of Thailand, although this is not an official visit.
