Vimy Ridge Day! One hundred years ago today, the battle began. The French had been trying to capture it, with no success, for over two years. The Canadians took three days! The first time in history that Canadians fought as a unified force under Canadian officers (OK! Byng was a Brit, but later as Lord Byng of Vimy, he was Governor General of Canada). One of the veterans of the battle said, 'We went up the ridge as Nova Scotians and Albertans. We came down as Canadians!'

'Monarchy can easily be ‘debunked;' but watch the faces, mark the accents of the debunkers. These are the men whose tap-root in Eden has been cut: whom no rumour of the polyphony, the dance, can reach - men to whom pebbles laid in a row are more beautiful than an arch. Yet even if they desire equality, they cannot reach it. Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes or film-stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food and it will gobble poison.' C.S. I was going to link some articles about the commemoration of this great battle, which was attended by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and some chap using the title of "President of France" whatever that is.  However, all the articles I seemed to find were mostly breathless fawning about the good looks of the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and the Prime Minister of Canada, and very little about the battle and the men who laid down their lives 100 years ago.  It irks me when a serious historic commemoration is reduced to breathless accounts of how "hunky" these men are, or what the royal women chose to wear, or how their hair was styled.

Except of course if jewels are involved.  We need details of royal jewels at every occasion.
