The Diaries of Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich Romanov have been published, and they have been scathing towards King George V.  The Grand Duke blames King George for allowing the murder of Emperor Nicholas II and his family by "not lifting a finger" to help the Czar escape.  He writes that he hopes that Russians never forgive the British King.  He wrote about an apparently difficult meeting with the King and Queen Mary, from which the Grand Duke stormed out after the King made flippant remarks about the Russian revolution.

Grand Duke Dimitri is most famous for having taken part in the murder of Rasputin

While the British government were quite open to the idea of giving refuge to the Imperial family, it is true that the King was strenuously opposed and in the end his views held sway. This is not to his credit, but it is ridiculous to give him sole, or any, blame for the murders. It would have been by no means easy to extract the family from Russia in wartime conditions, even while Kerensky was in power and willing to see them go, and even had George V been entirely in favour it might well never have happened. In the end the blood of the Emperor and Empress and their innocent children and servants is entirely on the hands of Lenin who authorised the murders and all those involved in carrying them out. Grand Duke Dmitri was an unstable and rather peculiar individual whose views on the matter don't seem to me to carry great weight.
