Today I bring you the two scepters of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom.  These magnificent pieces are among the most impressive items in the regalia of the British monarchy.

The Sovereign's Scepter with the Cross.

The Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross
The Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross

The scepter with the cross is an exquisite example of jewel workmanship.  The Sovereign's Scepter With The Cross, of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.  The scepter is a gold rod divided in three sections.  Each section is separated by an enamelled collar of light sky blue enamel with vine work of dark blue enamel and a platinum spiral and old cut diamonds at even intervals on each of these collars.  The magnificent top of the scepter begins with a small enamelled crown containing diamonds and rubies , topped by a very large open heart shape containing within it the magnificent Star of Africa Diamond (also known as the Cullinan I Diamond) which weighs 530.2 carats.  The Cullinan remains the largest colorless diamond in the world.  This heart shaped structure is surmounted by enamelled brackets mounted with step-cut emeralds, and by a faceted amethyst fglobe, set with table and rose-cut diamonds, rubies, spinels and emeralds, with a cross above set with more diamonds, with a table-cut diamond on the front, and an emerald on the reverse.  The pommel of the sceptre is enamelled and mounted with rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds set on fine silver filigrie work over the gold shaft of the scepter. The scepter with the cross represents the sovereign's temporal power and is associated with good governance.

The scepter with the dove is formed from a gold rod, in three sections, enamelled in white with dark blue vine work, and gem-set silver filigrie collars at the intersections, surmounted by a gold monde, with an applied silver zone and arc set with rose diamonds, and a gold cross supporting an enamelled dove with outspread wings. The collars are mounted variously with rose- and table-cut diamonds, step- and table-cut rubies, emeralds, sapphires and spinels. At the base of the scepter is a compressed spherical pommel set with further rose-cut diamonds. The scepter represents the sovereign's spiritual role, with the dove representing the Holy Ghost. Traditionally it has been known as 'the Rod of Equity and Mercy'.

These scepters are handed to the Monarch during his/her robing and enthronement, and he or she holds these as they are crowned.

The Soveriegn's Orb

The Sovereign's Orb

The Sovereign's Orb is formed from a hollow gold sphere, banded equatorally and polarly with clusters of emeralds, rubies and sapphires, surrounded by rose-cut diamonds, each in a enamel mount, between single rows of pearls. At the summit is an octagonal step-cut amethyst, surmounted by a cross set with rose-cut diamonds, with a table-cut sapphire in the center on one side and an emerald on the other, and with pearls at the angles and at the end of each arm. The Orb is a representation of the sovereign's power and symbolizes the Christian world, with its cross mounted on a globe, and the bands of jewels dividing it up into three section representing the three continents known in medieval times. During the coronation service the monarch is anointed with holy oil, then robed in coronation robes, and then invested with a number of ornaments including the Sovereign's Orb, which is placed in the right hand of the monarch, before being placed on the altar.

Now for some more unconventional royal jewels by Cartier, a major producer or regal jewelery.

Queen Marie of Romania's Black Steel Tiara

[_mbk1]

Queen Marie of Romania was a very unconventional woman for any age, so it shouldn't surprise that she had unusual taste in jewels as well.  Cartier experimented for a while with some unusual materials, and they made this dramatic black steel tiara for the queen.
This Kokoshnik style tiara combines blackened steel with platinum mounting and precious stones. Bordered by bands of calibré-cut rubies and old-mine and rose-cut diamonds, the center portion of the tiara includes thirteen pear-shaped diamonds set in calibré-cut ruby frames and single circular-cut diamonds set on the stark background created by the blackened steel.  The tiara was made to a special order in 1914 by Cartier. This very dramatic tiara suited the personality of the very dramatic Queen Marie (born Princess Marie of Edinburgh), and although it was very heavy, the Queen wore it often as she knew it suited her so well.  This fascinating piece ended up back in the collection of Cartier who often exhibit it.  I saw it when it came to the Brooklyn meuseum a few years back along with a fabulous collection of Romanov jewels.

The Black Onyx Tree Tiara

[_cot]

The black onyx tree tiara is a striking kokoshnik style tiara unusually incorporating black onyx stones and black enamel in the shape of an art deco tree, surrounded by diamonds set in plantinum with pearls along the top.  Although not strictly speaking a royal jewel since this has yet to be purchased by or for a royal family, I think it would look very magnificent on the head of a restored Empress Maria Vladimirovna of all the Russias.  *Hint hint Russians, hint hint*.  This is still part of the Cartier house collection.

The annual Diplomatic Reception was held again this year at Buckingham Palace in the presence of the senior members of the Royal Family of the United Kingdom.  The white tie and tiara's event was marked as usual with a display of some of the magnificent royal jewels available to the royals.  The photograph below of the seniormost royals was released by the palace.

As usual much was made of the Duchess of Cambridge making a rare appearance wearing a tiara.  This year she again wore the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara once favored by the late Princess of Wales.

The Duchess of Cornwall was resplendent in the Boucheron Honeycomb Tiara which was once favored by the late Queen Mother, and her signature pearls.

An interesting article on the Koo-i-Noor diamond which currently adorns the crown of the British Queen Consort, and which originated in India.
