The King and Queen of Norway, together with the Crown Prince and Princess presented the Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 to the President of Colombia for his efforts towards ending the civil conflict there.  AS usual the Norwegian royal family took a rather puritan approach to these ceremonies, wearing dark business wear and seated on spartan chairs with just the royal arms printed on the back rests indicating they were meant for royals.

All the other Nobel Prizes were presented by the King and Queen of Sweden together with the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel.  The ceremony was much more regal.  It was as usual a much more formal evening event requiring white tie for men, evening gowns for women, all resplendent with orders and decorations.  It was followed by a grand banquet.

Crown Princess Victoria also looked regal in another very impressive tiara along with the necklace, earings and brooch from the cameo parure.

Here is some excellent quality film from part of the Stockholm ceremony. Bob Dylan was this years Literature laureate but did not attend. Instead, Patti Smith performed his song A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall and accepted the award on his behalf. The film is of the performance, but there are several good shots of the King and Queen, the Crown Princess (who appears to be very much enjoying herself) and Prince Daniel. Patti has some trouble with the lyrics and even stops the song at one point, having lost her way altogether, but soon hits her stride and I found the performance very beautiful and affecting.

The Daily Mail has some excellent photographs from both events.

Would anyone care about the Nobel prizes if they were hosted by republics? I certainly wouldn't.

"The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today by the President of Finland, and the other prizes were handed out by the President of Lithuania..."

No I think they would be completely obscure.
