Happy Birthday to His Imperial and Royal Highness; long may he reign once rightfully restored to the Southern Hemisphere's only Imperial Throne.

His Royal Highness Prince Ernst August of Hanover has married his long time companion, Russian designer Ekaterina Malysheva in a small civil ceremony at Hanover City Hall.  The couple will marry again in a lavish church and castle wedding this coming weekend.  Sadly a dispute over property has kept Prince Ernst Augusts' father away from the wedding festivities.  The elder Prince Ernst had gifted title of the family's Marienburg Castle over to his eldest son several years ago, but now is demanding that the castle be returned to him, and has said he will not attend the wedding unless he does so.

Prince Ernst August is the son of Prince Ernst August, the current head of the Hanover family, and his first wife Swiss heiress Chantal Hochuli.  Princess Caroline of Monaco is his step-mother.  He has a brother, Prince Christian of Hanover, and a half-sister Princess Alexandra of Hanover. (Peter will correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think the Daily Mail is correct when it says that the Prince is descended from Queen Victoria on his mother's side.  The Daily Mail is probably confusing him with his namesake father who is indeed maternally descended from Queen Victoria via her eldest daughter the Empress Frederick.  His father is also direct male line heir of Victoria's uncle Ernst August, King of Hanover and Duke of Cumberland.  Had Britain been subject to Salic law, young Prince Ernst August would be Prince of Wales.)

The new Princess of Hanover, Ekaterina Malysheva is a very successful fashion designer with a very upscale clientele.  She and the Prince have been a couple for nearly six years.

It's really complicated (exacerbated by the apparently very limited name pool in the House of Hanover), but the Mail is wrong and you are right, this particular Prince Ernst August has no descent from Queen Victoria through his mother. Nor, though, does his father Prince Ernst August descend from Queen Victoria through his mother either. His father Prince Ernst August however did so descend through his own mother. And as it happened was also in direct uterine line from Queen Victoria's mother, not through the great Queen herself but through her half-sister Princess Feodora of Leiningen. I hope I've made that all quite clear, but somehow I doubt it.

The House of Hanover put on a much more regal show over the weekend as the religious wedding of Prince Ernst August to Ekaterina Malysheva took place in Hanover.  The Daily Mail (riddled with errors as usual) did a good job of presenting photographs and video of the event.

The elder Prince Ernst August proved his petulance by refusing to be present at his son's wedding and withholding his blessing due to the fact that the younger Prince Ernst August failed to return the Hanover family properties that he had signed over to him previously.  Although the elder Prince of Hanover was not present his step-son Pierre Casiraghi (son of Princess Caroline of Monaco and Hanover, and who no matter what the Daily Mail says is NOT a Prince) was there with his wife and children, as well as Princess Alexandra of Hanover, the groom's half-sister.

It's too bad that old Prinz Ernst August chose not to attend the wedding, but it may all have been for the best. According to online reports, his behavior has long been considered a little bit eccentric, and who knows what would have happened. We all remember what occurred when the Duke of Savoy, also notable for his eccentric behavior, attended the nuptial festivities for young Prince (now King) Felipe of Spain many years ago. Ernst August's sons appear to be sensible, respectable young men, and an improvement over their father. Although, to his credit, the father did unite the Houses of Welf and Grimaldi through his second marriage.  Perhaps in his old age he'll manage to reform himself and comport himself with the dignity befitting his position.

Thanks for posting the wedding pictures of the young Prinz Ernst August. It was nice that he and his bride married in his traditional homeland, and utilized the Rathaus and Marktkirche in Hannover for their wedding. The horsedrawn-carriage was a nice royal feature, and the crowd of spectators looked happy. The traditional territory of the kingdom of Hanover took in (along with the old Grand Duchy of Oldenburg) most of the modern German bundesland of Neidersachsen. Hopefully young Ernst August and his younger brother will continue to maintain a royal presence there even in these republican times.

Well his first marriage ended amid scandal when he took up a rather indiscreet affair with Princess Caroline of Monaco when they took a trip together to Thailand.  He married Princess Caroline after he divorced his first wife, but is now rumored to have entered into an affair with another younger woman which was exposed during yet another trip to Thailand.  His fist fights and public urination scandals don't reflect well on him either.

It is also to be noted that the Prince's Casiraghi step-children were out in force to support their step-brother at his wedding rather than their step-father.  Very telling.

Prince George turns four today. The official birthday portrait shows that the royal orthodontist has been on the job, as one would hope and expect. I wish His Royal Highness and the entire Cambridge family a most enjoyable day.

Many Happy Returns to my future monarch (If I live long enough to see in his reign that is).
