His Royal Highness Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark (sister of Queen Margrethe) has died suddenly at age 82.  While the Prince had twice been treated for cancer in previous decades, his death was unexpected.  The Prince married Princess Benedikte in 1968, and they have three children, Prince Gustav (who succeeds him as Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg), Princess Alexandra and Princess Nathalie.  They also have four grandchildren.

DNA samples taken from King Richard III revealed that the Duke of Beaufort is NOT descended from the Plantagenets- there was an illegitimacy/non-paternity event in his family line. However this could also apply to Richard III himself. Richard III's grandfather Richard Earl of Cambridge was never acknowledged by his legal father Edmund, Duke of York who believed him to be the product of an affair the Duchess of York had outside their marriage. Richard Earl of Cambridge received no inheritance from the Duke of York, but was executed for treason by Henry V in 1415. So maybe King Richard's line was illegitimate, and not that of the Beauforts. DNA Samples would need to be taken from other deceased Plantagenet kings, and also from other male line descendants of Geoffrey V of Anjou.

King Michael of Romania (1921-2017) has just passed away. Last surviving active leader from World War II and was deprived of his throne illegally 70 years ago this year. He was never restored to his rightful place, that was one of history's great injustices.

This is very sad news. He was an outstanding monarch who sacrificed his Throne to save the lives of Romanian students in 1947. He also rescued Romania from the wrath of Joseph Stalin by removing the Nazi regime of Antonescu just in time. It is a national scandal that he was never restored to his rightful place on the Romanian Throne. God bless this remarkable sovereign.

What's going to happen now- there is no one adequate  to replace him?  He removed his only promising heir Nicholas Medforth-Mills after a domestic scandal. King Michael's  daughter is respected, but not her husband. They have no children. I suppose this is an end to a remarkable royal story.

Today's news was very saddening. I had always held on to a grain of hope that the Romanian monarchy would be restored within King Michael's lifetime, so that he could have the dignity of dying on the throne as a reigning monarch, de facto and de jure. I now feel rather bitter towards those Romanians who let down the sovereign who gave up so much for them. The prospects of a future restoration in Romania seem bleaker now than ever before. May His Majesty rest in peace.

Thanks for the previous postings concerning the passing of King Mihai (Michael). There is actually a nice old photo posted on Royalcello's blogsite showing Michael of Rumania and Prince Philip of Edinburgh as young boys riding their horses along the shore of the Black Sea. Philip and Michael were only a few months apart in age, with Philip being the older by about 4 months or so. Just guessing, but judging from the youngsters' ages, the photo must have been taken around 1930 or so. Michael may still have been King of Rumania at that time, though he must have been shortly afterwards succeeded by his father. Philip's family must have been in exile from Greece at that time. Their families had intermarried, and Philip and Michael were cousins.

I hadn't previously realized that Philip and Michael knew each other as boys. Fate is a strange thing, and we never know how things will turn out.  They both went on to very different destinies, which neither of them could have imagined or foreseen at that time.

I'm also very sorry to hear this news. He was indeed an outstanding monarch and I hope his dynasty will one day be restored one way or another.

His disgraced grandson Nicholas Medforth-Mills apparently tried to enter the King's home by force evidently in a desperate attempt to reconcile with his grandfather before he died. If think that this is such a shame. Nicholas got some Romanian girl pregnant, so his grandfather stripped him of his title, and his rights to the Throne. Now there is no clear succession. Hopefully Princess Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, will be big enough to reconcile with Nicholas. He is the only promising heir in King Michael's family, bar his German Hohenzollern cousins who don't want the Romanian Throne.
