This past Sunday, a suicide bomber triggered a bomb inside the Church of St. Peter, a church within the complex around the Cathedral of St. Mark in Cairo, the seat of the Papacy of the Coptic Orthodox Church.  The bomb went off at the end of the Holy Liturgy near the western doors of the church right when the congregation would have been leaving through those doors.  It exploded in the women's section of the church, so many of the victims were women and children.  (Note that some of the stories below state that the explosion was in the Cathedral itself.  This is not correct.  The bomb exploded inside the smaller St. Peter's Church which is part of the Cathedral Complex).

Egypt has held a state funeral with full military honors for the victims of this massacre, presided over by the President and the Coptic Pope.  It was held at the church of  St Mary & St Athanasius in Cairo.

Pope Francis issued his condolences

Patriarch Aphrem II of Antioch of the Syriac Orthodox Church sent his message of condolences.

Karekin II, Supreme Catholicos of All Armenians sent a message as well.

The Cathedral of St. Mark is the larger domed church in the back.  The smaller church in the foreground with the twin spires is the church of St. Peter which was bombed.
