His Majesty the King of Spain is recovering from hip replacement surgery after falling and breaking it during a hunting trip to Botswana.  The King has come under fire for going on an elephant hunt while at the same time serving as a patron of a conservancy organization.  Only a week earlier, his grandson injured himself with a firearm in another hunting accident.

Hunting and conservation go hand and hand when properly practiced. I am sure the king was hunting elephants on a legal hunting preserve.

Hunting elephants is not a legally sanctioned activity in any country in Africa.  That doesn't mean that it isn't happening, but in the case of African elephants, there is no case of hunting for conservation reasons since they are supposed to be a protected species.

You have 'rogues' even in 'protected species', as well as 'harvest-able local population/population management'.

Rogues usually go down by the warden's gun (or the erstwhile victims).

Managed herds can be 'hunted' with the 'profits' providing for range management.  Its not 'illegal' when the local population is 'large enough' to support harvesting.  Hunters are the 'best of conservationists', we actually pay to support wildlife.

Killing a rogue elephant on a rampage and setting out on a vacation to go find an elephant to shoot for fun(which was the case here) is not at all the same.  It just doesn't mesh well with the conservation themes of the King's patronage.  His Majesty should have been better advised as this makes him look like he doesn't practice what he preaches.

I've always been a big fan of the King, but I don't think this is his finest moment (which in my mind was when he asked Hugo Chavez why he didn't shut up).

King Juan Carlos has run into some more trouble.  As this revived thread will remind all, the King's abdication crisis was triggered after he fell and injured himself while on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana.  The fact that the King was elephant hunting while being the patron of wildlife conservation charities, and that he was on a luxury vacation in Botswana while his country was suffering a terrible recession all raised eyebrows.  What isn't mentioned in this thread was the other fact that raised eyebrows, the fact that the king was accompanied on this trip, not by Queen Sofia, but by Princess Corrina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, the divorced German aristocrat who at the time was reputed to be his mistress.  The crisis ensued and the King abdicated and made way for his son to ascend the throne as Felipe VI.  Rumors that King Juan Carlos would soon divorce his wife and marry his mistress eventually flamed out, and then reports that the relationship between the former monarch and his mistress had soured began to spread.

Now there are reports that Corrina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein has been recorded alleging that King Juan Carlos was involved in money laundering and had pocketed money from a high speed train deal with the Chinese, hidden property in Morroco purchased by him in her name and opened secret bank accounts in the name of a cousin in preparation of divorce proceedings agains Queen Sofia.  There are also intimations that the King benefited from a tax amnesty law that has since been struck down, but not retroactively.

The left wing PODEMOS party which recently assumed government in Spain is demanding an investigation.  However the new Prime Minister has stated that he cannot reveal who benefited from the tax amnesty issue, a denial that has feuled speculation that King Juan Carlos did indeed benefit.
