A date for the abdication of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito of Japan, and the accession of Crown Prince Narohito to the Chrysanthemum throne is being floated as the Prime Minister prepares to submit the needed legislation to the Diet (parliament).  The date being discussed is January 1, 2018.

There is a nice article here on the Crown Prince, who according what seems to be the current plan will next year become Japan's 126th Emperor. That is the number according to the official annals, anyway; the real figure no one knows or ever will, the origins of the institution being lost in the mists of time, but certainly it would be very large. I'm not quite sure why if the present Emperor is going to abdicate he doesn't just do it already, the necessary legislation having been put in place, but I expect there is some reason or other, possibly to do with auspicious dates if Shinto has such things. Or maybe just to allow the sclerotic Imperial Household to get every i dotted and t crossed with all the commas in place on the arrangements before anything actually happens, that's probably likeliest.

Now that Parliament has passed a law allowing Emperor Akihito to abdicate, the wheels have been set in motion for Crown Prince Naruhito to ascend the Imperial Throne.  The Prince has expressed his readiness to do so.
