I just say a news item that the famous Dutch music director Jaap van Zweden will start working for Philharmonic in New York.

Van Zweden knows Queen Beatrix personally and has made music for her in the past, and I still remember Royalcello spoke about him when I had dinner with him in Amsterdam three years ago. If I'm correct he is currently still working for Dallas, so I guess he will be missed there. Royalcello, I hope you will get someone equally talented in return, but I guess that will be difficult!

Yes, it is very exciting for Jaap and the New York Philharmonic. He still has two more years as music director in Dallas (until 2018) and we will continue to see him as Conductor Laureate until 2021. Ten years is a good length of time so it is not too shocking. It has been an honor to play under him in Dallas and I'm sure he will do great things under New York. It was he who hired me and then in November 2014 promoted me to second chair, so, I think I can say I have a good relationship with him.

I believe Jaap sincerely intended to introduce me to then-Queen Beatrix had she come to our concert at the Concertgebouw in March 2013, but with only a month left of her reign she was apparently too busy. Now with our April 2016 tour cancelled it seems unlikely there will be another chance like that...unless Dutch royalty come to Dallas!

Here is the New York Times article:

"Congratulations came in from royalty both musical (the conductors Riccardo Muti and Christoph von Dohnányi sent messages) and bona fide (Mr. van Zweden, who is Dutch, received a text from King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands)."

Good to see he's still in contact with our Royal Family!
