In other news, Pope Francis and the Order of Malta are in a bit of a tussle.  It is concerning that the Pope has tried to interfere with a sovereign order, whose officers were trying to up hold Catholic Church teachings.

I'm not entirely certain that is true. I can't offer any sources but in my experience the Polish, German, Austrian, most of the Iberian and all of the Nordic Bishops seem to be range from conservative to moderate. Of course, the opposite can be said about all of the low countries.

From the perspective of someone who has never been in the Americas, and who once again can't offer any reliable sources, that does not seem to be the case there. Especially the New York Archdiocese appear to be spectacularly liberal.

Either way, it's an abomination.

The New York Archdiocese is actually quite conservative leaning generally.  Liturgically although Norvus Ordo predominates, generally such innovations such as this are unheard of.  Indeed there are a couple of Tridentine Masses held around the city which I have attended.  New York Catholics may be politically liberal, but liturgically they are quite conservative for the most part.

I wish that were true! I've seen this type of thing many times in so-called 'youth' or 'teen' Masses. Also, here is an example of the leadership in New York. Granted, it was an outdoor Mass, but the man pictured was preaching the homily in a 'cheesehead'. He is Timothy Dolan, now the Cardinal Archbishop of New York. serveimage.jpeg

Sounds like Frankie's up to it again! The 'five-member commission' made up of Boeselager's buddies sounds a lot like the way he destroyed the Franciscans of the Immaculate Conception I mentioned earlier.

I assure you that Cardinal Dolan has not engaged in such crazed headgear since he's been Archbishop of New York (at least as far as I know).  While certainly from what I've seen as a guest, there are some rather liberal priests here (hugging as the sign of peace etc), by and large I've seen rather conservative practice when it comes to the Mass.  I attended a funeral at the Roman Catholic Church at the United Nations, the Church of the Holy family , some months ago for a family friend from western Africa.  I'd been there before.  Architecturally it is a hideous piece of 1960's modernist architecture, all stark white marble, unornamented hall with little detail.  I saw that efforts had been made to put up some iconography that made it look more church-like.  I was especially surprised to see the Hispanic priest (not sure what country he was from) perform the Mass facing East, and with great reverence.

See what the church looks like at their website.  Stark modern, very Paul VI style.  I believe he inaugurated it.

It's not difficult to believe that even the most holy of priests can lapse and wear the... strangest of attires, but it is good to know that it is not something he has continued doing when having such a revered office.

There are plenty of reasons not to have a very ornate church, in the Nordic dioceses money is the biggest one, but that is clearly not the case with this church.

After that sight, I think I need to look at something more traditional.

More of the 'Francis Effect' at work! The Diocese of Rockford, under Bishop Doran, used to be a haven of liturgical conservatism and traditionalism. Bishop Doran retired in 2012, and Papa Emeritus appointed Bishop Malloy as Ordinary. He would never have even tried these shenanigans under Pope Benedict, but he sees the way the wind is blowing from Rome!

More news from a Catholic source:

Although I pride myself in my middle of the road politics and my suspicion of both right and left politically, when it comes to religion and ritual I am a traditionalist.  While I started off slightly warm towards Pope Francis (I liked his perceived humility but regretted his shunning of traditionalism), I am now thoroughly put-off by him.  I once thought that his detractors were being unkind about what they said was feigned humility, but now I have to say I can  see their point.  There are very serious murmurings in the Vatican, even among his liberal allies, that the Pope has brought the church to the verge of schism.

From the perspective of an Oriental Orthodox person, Pope Benedict XVI remains my favorite Pope of the post Vatican II era.

Ethio, here is a post I made in the John Paul II thread:

Millions. who know no better, will follow him. The remnant that truly are Catholic will coalesce around faithful Bishops and Priests and await, in God's good time, the coming of a truly Catholic Pope. As I believe I've said, my daily prayer is, 'How long, O God, how long, until you send us a Catholic Pope'?

And according to some reports, he's quite aware of what he's doing. From a well known Traditionalist blog:

My mind is sadly drifting to the events of what happened to an Archbishop of Canterbury of the name of A'Becket a little too often lately for my liking in regards to the latest occupant of the See of Rome.
